Engine Re-build, What would you do?

The new short blocks used to be cheap but with the recent exchange rate fluctuations they went up and seem to have stayed up.
A good 2.1 stroker kit is a great option. I have experience of mapping the Engine Tuner and Lateral 2.1 kits and both will take massive power and provide a good base for future greediness
However ... maybe I have missed the part in the thread where John has expressed the future plans and targets for the car, but the std sti short block would take 450bhp and it is pretty easy to pick up a complete short block for less than a grand and problem solved.

As far as future plans go, I have none. The standard car was what I wanted, unfortunately I either bought the wrong one or have been unlucky. If I'm going the forged route then 300-350 will be an improvement and will at least seem like my money has gone somewhere.
So as far as future plans go, an engine that will last me very reliably for a couple of years (10000miles) as I can't afford to rebuild annually. And maybe something that when I come to sell the subaru fans will want to buy.
John.

Popping another good second hand sti short engine in there would be a cheap option and should be fine if buying the engine from a known vendor seeing as you are just looking to be back where you were. If you are looking for more power and have future intentions of going above 400bhp then consider the stroker kit option but that journey will not be cheap and I doubt you will have any change from your £3k budget regardless of who does it when you factor in other things like mapping fees, fuel pump and other changes that you tend to get sucked into doing just because the engine is out.
