ash

Apologies if my post offended you. If a moderator or Simon, or Pete feel it should be edited / deleted fine with me.

A few points though. You may notice the smiley at the bottom of the post. In addition, I think I know Pete enough to say he would chuckle at my ‘tongue in cheek’ posting.

As for myself being stupid, I think you'll find a great number of contributors to this board would disagree. Of my 1800+ most have been to help people to the best of my ability. There are a few in the muppet show however

Regards

David

Hey, come on now, I am a reformed character

Anyway, you all DO realise that petrol is a BY-PRODUCT of the refining process dont you?? - nothing special to do with it except sell it to propel motor carraiges!!!!

So all that cr4p about drill, find, swim down, sell mother and daughter is all bollox - they will do that ANYWAY to extract the oil for a multitude of other uses!!!!!!!!!!!!

So? its a waste product that the government taxes at an immoral rate and Shell is upping its price of OPtimax at an immoral rate too - its finding its level, do what I have done -STOP using it - until they get the message and drop the price!!

You listening Shell????????????????????????

Shark - you didnt tell me you were a petrol pump attendant - is your name Colin?

Bringing this all back to being dull, I think it's a marketing thing. Down the road it's 76p (ish); 20 miles away in ye olde home counties, it's 88p.
So, they have more money than I do, then...

I'm no expert on the oil business, but one thing is obvious and that is, for 99% of the car driving public petrol is a commodity. Commodity products have to rely on high volume and low profits. Clever marketing like Optimax, Greenshield stamps, free car-wash etc are only there to switch customers from rival outles and boost volume, which boosts profits.

Petrol station shops are a big part of the brand-switching stragey, like Shell Select - go to buy a loaf of bread and fill up while you're there. Shell pushed their Select stores about ten or so years ago, and now everyone's at it. It is a key driver of petrol sales volume.

Optimax is another clever ploy - the first I can remember since Shell's last disastrous campaning while wrecked a few motors with its radical formulation. Shell's putting the price of Optimax up is either because they're now confident that performance drivers will pay it, or they have to increas it to make ends meet and if people won't pay 80, they will drop it. And it's still cheaper than 97RON Super UL with Octane Booster.

On a related topic, it has always annoyed me that the government penalises high octane fuel when lower economy 95RON fuel produces far more CO2 greenhouse gas which I thought all agreed was the single biggest danger to global warming.

Cheers,

Richard.

BTW, whilst we're on the subject of Global Warming, the Earth is now cooling down, not getting hotter and there is a petition being carried out amongst the Scientific community which sates that they were wrong about the whole Global Warming thing.

Trouble is, the governments don't want to listen because they've based their last ten years worth of policy on what is now looking to be on shaky ground

You never know, one day, they might stop taxing fuel and emissions under the guise of being "green" but then again, pigs might fly....

If the earth is cooling down, then we should pollute as much as possible to warm it up again. Therefore the govt should reduce the tax on high polluting petrol and introduce a tax on trees, grass and gardens

Unhappy

The real joke is that mankind accounts for 2% of the planet's greenhouse gasses. How much difference do you think we could make if we stopped industrialised civilisation as we know it.....???? Not a lot is the answer

Ouch....that hurt!!!!!

£41 to fill up on Opti this morning. don't know how long I can sustain that level of outlay. Surely the price of this has to come down a little, I just wonder if this was always the intention of Shell to raise the price slowly for the 'better off' performance car owners who buy this fuel. If that is the case they can off.

Mind you the price of standard unleaded is creeping up again I see.
