Flash,

STi is to Subaru as Cosworth is to Ford (years ago now, lol).

A WRX and an STi look similar, but underneath the two cars are completely different. (I was amused at the comment about a heavy Sti not staying with a standard WRX.....funny ****!!!)

Anyway in more modern Ford speak it would be the similar to the comparison between Focus RS vs. ST.

WRX is still the top of the range standard Impreza, and goes well as you would expect with a Turbo charged 2liter, but is no STi.

On confused.com I got quoted £1400 for an Evo 5 and £700 for an EVO 4 but after I'd got the 4 I checked a few performance companies and the 5 was pretty much the same

I genuinely got a WRX over the STI as I thought both were very similar at the time

That said, it does bring a big smile to my face when the underdog beats an STI but my gearbox, clutch, brakes & even engine are all feeling a bit iffy.

RSMatt, dry your tears. In reality, they are both great cars.

If you want to modify the car a lot cheaply, then yes, the new age STI is the one to go for, but if you just want an all rounder, there's no point in going for the STI over the WRX.

Consider this: to get the WRX up to close to 300hp, you'll have to change the exhaust and a remap, possibly with a panel air filter. The STI with the PPP pack makes 300hp, or if remapped may make about 330hp. Ask yourself if those extra 30hp are worth noticably much when it comes to accelleration?

If you want more than about 330, then you end up changing the turbo, exhaust etc even on the STI, and the WRX is safe to about 400hp on standard internals. If you treat the gearbox with some respect, the WRX gearbox probably isn't going to grenade on you either.

If you want to take the cars on track, then both cars brakes will be inadequate, so you'll end up upgrading them and both cars suspension will be too soft too, so again, you'll end up changing with both cars.

My own new age standard looking(ish) WRX keeps up with a 2001 911 GT3 on the main straight on brands hatch, and the gearbox is still going strong 20k miles after mods being performed. I do wish I had a six speed gearbox, but even if my 5 speed broke, I'd probably fit another one - you can fit many gearboxes for the price of one 6 speed.

However, if I was starting again, I'd buy an STI, but when I bought mine back in 2003 there was a 5k price difference, and I think I'm still up on purchasing the WRX. Obviously with depreciation, the gap between an STI and WRX has narrowed, so it wouldn't make sense to start with a WRX now and modifying it, but back then it did.

About 3-4k difference when I bought mine 3 years ago. TBH it's just the STI injectors, intercooler, boot spoiler & scoop I lacked but I have them now for pennies.
I suppose Ferrodo pads will cure the brakes and a OE clutch n gearbox won't break the bank. I really loathe the idea of a 6 speed but I've never test driven an STI so you never know!

i love my bugeye sti and the fact that they are rarer than the blobs makes me love it even more,its way better looking,feeling,driving,handling,brakeing than a wrx.but if you can only afford a wrx your still gonna love the basic way imprezas feel and drive.how often will you really be testing it against another impreza on the road anyway ? not very often,so enjoy it whatever it is wrx or sti.

Sorry, but I had mine mapped to 340 bhp and swapped the front discs for PF, and even "classic" owners couldn't believe how quick it went and stopped on track.

A bugeye STI ( in good nick ) is a performance bargain...

P.S. At current prices the WRX is also too good to be true, if you can afford to insure one...

Thanks guys you have been so helpful, I have found out the wrx I'm getting has a sports exhaust from new provided from Subaru when first purchased, it's a wrx sports exhaust, which apparently takes the car to 240 brake, I have been reading about panel air filters, if I put in a green cotton one would I have to have a re-map or should it be ok without one?

No map needed for panel filter.

Larger injectors, de-cats, bigger turbos will deffo need a map when you really get the bug!

Jury is out on intercoolers?

You will be OK with good decated exhaust(in this i mean Decated downpipe,decated center pipe plus if its possible fit Decated Up pipe),Panel filter(K&N or Green Cotton,Cosworth etc),3 port boost solenoid,Walbro Fuel Pump is also recommended and after that you will see around 260-280bhp(i've seen few with 290bhp+),plus remap.

WRX TMIC will run off the puff somewhere between 320-330bhp,if you are want go at this bhp 330-350bhp you will need STi pink injectors(or hawkeye WR/STi injectors will be OK),VF30,VF34,VF35 and i will advise fit FMIC or STi TMIC(this will be little bit expensive due you must fit as well STi scoop plus STi undertray)..

Jura is it a TD04 on the bug, if so what does that run out of puff at, I read somewhere it was 280 but surely it can't be?

Yes on buegeye/blob or hawk WRX is only TD04L,which are OK for 270-280bhp(i've seen few with 290bhp and one is here which made 298bhp)

280bhp is possible quiet easily with good setup

I had an 03 wrx and spent loads on it to get it how i wanted, I sold that and bought a my05 jdm sti and wish I had spent the extra in the first place as all this needed was an exhaust, panel filter, 3 port solenoid and a remap, much cheaper than what I spent on the wrx, only thing the wrx beats the sti on is passenger comfort as the sti is much firmer not sure if uk cars are as stiff as the jdm though
