We've never met, but it's almost as if you know me
Mine was diagnosed with cylinder head issues, so for the last three years I've been trying to kill it. But Alan and the team have a pair of fettled/cam'd heads ready to go onto my S-CDB once built.
Just got to last another 6-8 weeks on an MTB to work and back
dunx

Hats off to anyone who has the time, knowledge and diligence to assemble a high powered build themselves. You'd have to be soooo careful though, as if you get something wrong, like a clearance somewhere, you're going to wreck some nice expensive parts and be well out of pocket.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: there is a big difference price wise between a short engine that can take a certain bhp and a complete set up that will produce that bhp. The right turbos these days are £1400 alone.
From experience, at that level, you MUST have the right supporting mods too i.e. brakes and suspension, otherwise you end up with something that is fast in a straight line, but won't stop or go around corners properly, which is what these cars are about!

I have the luxury of time so i'm in no rush and want to make sure everything is right this time, which is why i'm doing it myself.
I have a mate who is like a mad scientist, and i think he has a photographic memory so the details i forget he will be on hand to remember.

My 2p worth.
I believe that a high power (>500) engine based on a 2 litre block will be more reliable long term than equivalent power based on a 2.5 block. So if you have a choice start with a 2 litre cdb.
There is so much history/experience with 2 litre based builds, I'd go that route - 2.1 stroker or 2.33.
Whatever the price for your project, add a good 33% minimum to get to the actual cost - extras suddenly seem a good idea !

David Vizard's how to tune an A series engine bible was not even in colour when you were pictured! haha. (You have Duncan to thank for pointing that one out)!

They're tough buggers the bugeye engines. A lad I know has an 02 Bug with 120k on it. It gets absolutely hammered including drag days and is still going strong. Personally I'd rather have an engine go bang that I had 'ragged' than one I'd mollycoddled.
The wait will be worth it.

P.s. OP if your anything like me just do it once and do it right.. i could easily go stock location 500bhp route but i know that ill only say .. if only i went rotated etc,... so if that sounds like you, just go the whole hog.. then you wont be dissapointed or thinking only if..

Hows the quality of the fuel in Croatia ? That is going to be a significant issue on ANY high powered Scoob engine.
We do high power 2.1's as well, we just don't make so much fuss about it. AND any properly built engine, will have been together about 4 or 5 times by the time we actually build it. No other way..................
" Building " an engine and putting together a pile of parts are not the same thing.

well im going for 550 on a 2.1
expensive -yes, but i wanted a well built engine with quality parts,
no point it going bang after 3 runs.
and most importantly built by people who have experince building this kind of engine - thats the most important bit to me.
makes shelling out a lot of money a touch easier when you have complete faith in the people doing the work.
cant fookin wait to get mine lol
how much fun is this going to be in a classic
and im seriously considering stripping the car, to get the power to weight up a bit more
see what happens lol

AS I have found out so far 500bhp and reliable (well as reliable as a 500bhp car can be) is very expensive. Im going 2.35 with front mounted GT30R billet and 20% methanol. Also aiming for sub 1100kg. Should be a hoot.
My budget started at £10k but it looks like it will end of being more like £20k. That is with the best of everything and me doing everything apart from the grp N cage, engine and gearbox builds.

Thank god, at least one voice of reason.
Well iv'e got to wait until i split the engine to see how bad it is then if there is a quick fix i think i'll do it and get it on the road again.
In the mean time iv'e sourced a cdb and i shall be taking the 2.1 stroker route with that block, using the heads off the original engine and i still have not decided if i'm going rotated or not, if i can source the parts for the right money i will.
So i shall be taking my time and collecting all the parts over the coming months with a view to having it up and running this time next year so watch this space.
Thanks for all the replies guys.
