One dog or two? raw food for dogs is a no no.

Use by dates are a con, designed to get gullible people to throw perfectly good food away, and buy more

The trick is to use your local greengrocers & butchers regularly, rather than a supermarket once a week

Any vegetables that have gone beyond fresh goes into casseroles or hotpots, just like my Gran used to

Any beef or lamb (but not pork or chicken) that's managed to survive past a couple of days in a house full of committed carnivores gets the same treatment, it all adds to the flavour

Normally "Best Before" on beer rather than use by, had beer that's been at least a year out of date and it tasted fine.

Really

My dog loves fresh rabbit. I've never managed to even get one off her, let alone prepare and cook it for her

Dogs can eat raw anything so long as they are used to it.

Years ago meat was kept outside in a meat safe with sides made out of perforated zinc. If the meat smelled ok it was eaten, with no ill effects.

If there were any jellow bluebottle eggs in a clump on the meat it was scraped off and the meat was eaten anyway-once again with no ill effects!

In those days, no one could afford to throw food away unless it was actually putrid.

Never mind years ago Les, my Gran was still doing it that way right up until she died 15 years ago, at 93 years old.

Well, you can make it long as long as it continues to pass look/sniff/taste test for your standards.

I have an accentric friend who gets lots of out-of-date food from his local supermarket for his farm pigs, but he eats that food as well. He calls himself a freegan, and prides in eating dated food. A very proud pig indeed.

What's the oldest food in your fridge?
Erm, in fact, there a few "oldest" things in my fridge. I have two brocolli flowers that were reduced to .40p 3 days ago. I shall wait for them to look a bit yellow before I throw them. Why do I bother if I have to chuck these reduced price things, anyway; I do not know. I also have a dated 1/4th of an Iceberg lettuce in convincing condition. I have a little bit of wild rocket salad left in a pathetic state, which could do with binning. I threw 3 tasteless pears today from our fruit bowl, they were looking quite dented at places.

Like most, I wouldn't eat dated meat, nor would I give it to my cats. I can tolerate milk for a bit longer than the given use by date. I trust my gut feelings to tell me when to pour it down the sink.

Great thread.

I don't believe in use by dates, except for cook-chilled foods. Listeria poisoning's a real risk.

Use by dates, I tend to follow. If I go over it would only be by a day or two depending what it was/if (or how long) it had been opened.

Best before dates, I pay far less attention to.

We don't really buy a load of food at once, we tend to just buy what we'll probably use week to week, so generally we don't have loads of excess to worry about. If stuff doesn't get used for whatever reason, it is treated by me on a case to case basis so to speak.

A tip. To keep broccoli fresh, cut the end off and stick it in a jar full of water in the fridge. Lasts ages. Even if it's floppy when you get it home, it soon perks up

Doesn't surprise me CPD, she would be the right age too.

Didn't do her any harm did it.

I've got some tomatoes in my sandwiches today that were supposedly out of date on the 9th June.

Slightly soft, but perfectly edible.

Would never eat dairy or meat products beyond their date though.

Winds me up so much when people go on about raw meat being bad for a dog. What the **** do they eat in the wild? ?? You should NEVER give a dog big amounts of pork either!

Here is a fact: My beagle went from mums tit to puppy rusk things - then we got him. Tried all of the puppie foods on the market to always find **** all over the place. He couldn't keep any food down and was in the vets at least once a month with them even thinking we were not feeding him.

We got a dog trainer that showed us a raw meat diet for him (BARF - google it) The only time in 4yrs he has been back to the vets is for his booters and a check of a lump - turned out he has a massive **** lol.

Poor Lucy is gonna be split when it's breeding time.

You might as well make a money bonfire.
Milk is ok unless it makes worples (n) in your tea.

Thats about right. My wife worked in food safety for some years and she says best before is just a guide. Mostly on foods where there is little risk of becoming sick from eating it even if it has gone "off".

Foods with use by, thats a lot more risky - and my wife will eat almost anything, but if something has gone more than a couple of days past its use by then she will bin it.

Sauces, jams, dried foods, tinned foods etc will last almost forever so long as they are not opened.

I will usually eat things that pass the "smell" test as well. Certainly off meat is okay, off chicken absolutely not.

I have been sick (and very, exorcist sick) once from drinking off milk. I didn't know it was off, it tasted 'okay' but a bit sour and about an hour later I was throwing up and kept doing so for the next 12 hours or so.

You made worples up, and then got your mates to get it in the OED..... again.

Milk is OK unless sniffing it makes you boak.

To be fair, I think I know what worples are..... and a keen student can get another 3 days from a pint of milk after the aforementioned 'worples' are observed.
