I test drove my mate's previous Type R STi 5 (prior to him buying it), and even at its dyno'd 267bhp (a bit down on the factory 276), the gearing made it feel mental!
God knows what c.380+/380+ would feel like!

I know its not a 5 speed but my 45k 6 speed jdm box lasted about 5k and 6 trackdays at 460/460 before I broke synchros/selector fingers/selector rods so anything can be broken if abused. I ran it on Silkolene silktrans oil too which aint cheap!!

Linky???
Im running a 5 speed at the moment with 210k kms on a sti wagon with ej257 with a fresh forged engine the 2.5 conversion was done at 159k kms. I'm only running actuator pressure at the moment as I want to get a proper map on it (Autronic Ecu).Id say I'll destroy the box on dyno knowing my luck
Was running 350ft/lb torque before the build at 1.5 bar. The box is noisey though in some gears, oil is clean and no selection problems whatsoever. Play it by year and see

Over 400 of each on the same box with a 2.1 a 20G and methanol, will soon see how it lasts with a 2.35
Ran about 380-400 on my old 2.0L with the 20G and methanol on my 752 box without it ever grenading as well.
But I'm always waiting for it to happen, which in it's self can be quite worrying if I'm far from home.

I do miss the short ratio though.

As it's the physical extra width of the 6-sp's teeth, i.e. wider cogs, that give the gears the extra strength and greater torque-handling capacity.
'Only' 3 (worthwhile) upgrade options available:-
1st - OEM New Age 6-sp (esp. the Hawkeye's - stronger synchros and strongest all round).
2nd - Scooby Clinic's 5-sp replacement gear set (enthusiastically endorsed by API David )
3rd - PPG 5-sp replacement gear set (but doesn't come with a 5th - but think you can pay extra for it?)

* David, are these even stronger than the previous gen. Hawkeye's box?
* Is there a non-DCCD version - i.e. regular 50:50 split - of the MY08 Hatch's 6-sp, too?
* So, everything is included in the kit for a "drive in/drive out" swap over (inc. either the 3.9:1 R160 or R180 rear diff, as needed)? How much for the diff on top?

I think it all depends on driving style. You can use 400bhp well without ragging the gearbox. There is always exceptions to all rules but in general if your 350+ then put a little aside each month towards a new box just incase lol

ALL UK supplied 6 speeds were dccd from WR1 onwards. These ones have a near as dammit 50 /50 split All hatch 6 speeders are 3.9 front 3.9 rear.
The gearbox kit as above is everything you need. Rear diff is extra at £350.00 + VAT [ £420.00 inc ] for a viscous R160 rebuilt / checked here. R180 rear diff with Suretrack - rebuilt / checked as above is £750.00 + VAT [ £900.00 inc ]
R180 3.9's are really hard to get these days and the price reflects the rarity value.
