I don't think this new government has anything to do with it -- I am sure they would like the story to quietly die too, no one comes out clean

Cameron has been cosying up to New International for ages and is a personal friend of Rebekah Wade's and Elisabeth Murdoch

they all live within a few hundred yards of each other, and they all have known about this for ages

The Guardian has been pushing this story, along with the New York Times and it just refuses to go away

I remember listening to a commentator -- years ago when the story was just a tiny bit about Prince Williams voice mail

The commentator said “mark my words this story will run and run – it is a massive story”

Thats kind of my point; Something doesn't quite stack up; Something within our police/politics must have happened to finally get the ball rolling. Because up til this point all attempts at getting it to roll had failed as too many people at the top stopped it in its tracks.

I don't think the other tabloids have enough leverage unless something else changed.

it suited the tabloids to keep it under wraps because they also employ the same tactics - although not on the industrial scale the Murdoch's press seems too

Of course the police lead a Luke warm inquiry; they are up to their armpits in it, I bet a few coppers have nice Villas in spain paid for by the NOTW

i think it just got to big, with too many people involved, and when it started to affect ordinary people aka the Dowlers

it has gone from being some sort of local "Westminster media village" story of little interest outside the Media/Political class to one that interest everyone

nothing can be worse than losing a child - nothing, and NOTW callous treatment of the Dowlers beggars belief

I have always hated these dirty little 'news' papers. I'm amazed people still buy them.
They never tell the truth but present the rumour.
I would say they had a hand to play in the last recession by having headlines such as 'We're all doomed!'.
Nope, still here, still alive and still eating.

This is one massive can of worms that is about to open up. There must be 1000's of people in powerful positions that have sold stories to NOTW and the associated press.

Hopefully, heads will roll and RM will be banged up.

A related article. It's about Hugh Grant, who I can see many won't have sympathy for considering the other phone hack cases, but he has a point that this should be stopped from happening to anyone. And his last comment made me laugh..

apparently News International has announced she was holiday at the time of the Dowler and Soham hacking

the "on holiday" excuse is a well know tactic in Fleet street for avoiding the blame

insiders are incredulous New International have actually come out with it

Isn't the NOTW's/the PI's actions a CLEAR case of PtCoJ?!

The full force of the law needs to be applied.

Sick, self-serving fvckers!!!

Someone somewhere supressed that investigation and put it on ice. Was it an associate of Murdoch? Was it a Labour peer in Murdoch's pocket? Was it the upper ranks of the Police in the pocket of Murdoch?

What is interesting is it only started gaining steam during this present Con/Dem government; What happened differently now to make the investigation go ahead where before it just 'stopped'. This goes far deeper than the morals of hacking the phone of a dead teenager. It goes straight to the top of the NOTW and its owners who up until recently flatly denied anything happened and only just now admitting and co-operating (damage limitation? ), it also highlights corruption in the higher ranks of our police, and our politicians.

Editors need to go to jail. Ignorance is not an excuse; and those excuses were a lie anyway. Same with police officials that halted the original investigations. Doubt that'll happen though
To go along with all the hacking reports,we also find that the police have been accepting pay in return for information that they had on private individuals!

What is going on these days...surely there is no way that they can justify that sort of behaviour.

And the Sun will no doubt go 7 days a week.

168 years and the biggest selling paper on the planet gone, I'd still like to see the person at the NOTW responsible or sanctioning the hacks to be brought to justice.

I feel sorry for the innocent employees who have been slung on the heap in an effort to further the owner's ambitions.
