PSL never mentions the flat 4 diesel either; I am off to Litchfield`s for a diesel remap on Wednesday.

I have to admit my Audi 3.0TDi (A4) remapped is one of the best cars I've driven.

It's a pretty safe map as well (280bhp / 390ft/lbs) but it pulls like a bloody train and still returns well over 50mpg on a long run (seen 56-57mpg when bimbling at 70)

The 6-pot diesel noise is really, really smooth (when it's warmed up!) and the Milltek exhaust makes it sound great

One of my friends was thinking about a c2006 2.0 turbodiesel A4 - was gonna get it mapped. Any idea what they're like/what bhp & torque/0-60 to expect?

It's not up there with the Honda 2.2, 4 pot for diesel greats though

Just ask PSL how good it is

I was always told the 1.9 is the much better engine - I think it was the plastic cam tensioner or something on the 2.0 that was well dodgy?

I've heard of 200bhp out of the 1.9 though, not sure about the torque figure

Is it an auto? The performance I can believe but the economy sounds optimistic. I drove an Audi A6 two litre TDI auto and found it to be only marginally more economical than my STI. This was taking it easy on the motorway with a a couple of spirited bits.

Ive a 2 year old A5 3.0 tdi , I like it, best mpg Ive seen is 44 mpg that was on a slow road 60mph for ages, driven as i like to drive it, 34 to 38 ish ?? nice car (for me)

Mine has turned 27k now and pulls like a train and matchs my classic turbo like for like but double the MPG

The term 'pulls like a train' seems to be used quite a bit when describing a diesel car's performance. From what I can recall, trains don't accelerate all that swiftly or is the description spot on ?

They probably would accelerate quickly without all the carriages attached. With a trains though it's got to be all about torque to get the large mass moving. Once it's going inertia kicks in.

So yeah in car terms you'd have to be towing five caravans or similar to "pull like a train".

I agree 200hp seems quite easy to get out the Fiat engine. It must be funny wasting people on the road in diesel Vectra
Lots of fun when the mood takes me or the opportunity presents itself.
Best bit is when they have put the foot to the floor then look in their mirror to see how far behind you are only to see you indicating to overtake.
I am not far away from my final goal and can sacrifice a little of the 272 bhp for torque of 380 ft/lbs or thereabouts. The next turbo incarnation will be the decider.

I love the all out aggression of my Impreza, but I must admit I have a soft spot for VAG diesels.

My mate has a Fabia VRS on a '54 plate, it's an impressive little car, nimble, quick and good on fuel. He uses it as his daily runner and he can't fault it.

We're an Evolution Chips agent, in the last week I've remapped an Audi A4 2.0tdi, a Seat Leon 2.0tdi FR and a VW Golf 2.0tdi GT. The owners and myself have been well impressed with the end result, the Golf really impressed me, so much that I was incredibly tempted!
Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to compare these cars to a 2.0 Turbocharged Impreza, but in terms of the balance between performance and economical driving I think the German diesels have got sorted!

The skoda fabia vrs (mk1) or octavia VRS oil burners are great. Not half bad for the money and 20,000 mile/2yr service intervals. They re-map ok as well i've been told.

Harvey you are messing with my head after reading about your adventures with diesel engines I'm starting to change my mind

I always thought of diesels like the chubby guy at school, no real threat unless they mowed you down, looks like I've had my head under too many petrol car bonnets to of paid attention to what's going on in the diesel world.

Indeed, things have moved on significantly. When I got my Scooby I wouldn't have entertained the idea of ever owning an oil burner. Now however, seriously considering a 335D touring for my next motor (don't tell Matteeboy though ).

I have a CLS 320 CDI & an Impreza, my Impreza's in bits in the drive tho lol.

CLS is not slow tho and very very comfortable

The Subaru gives me a big smile but theres always a little fear that something will happen, too loud at night and getting pulled over etc when driving late or something falling apart .

With the CLS I am completely care free, its automatic its quite fast and smooth and no risk of any problems and a very relaxing drive, put on a music video etc.

The Subaru gives me satisfaction when your on max boost here and there but it's not an everyday car.

I know this is an old topic but was just discussing this on another forum and while moving some stuff about on here this morning came across this topic and thought it might be nice to show a graph from a reasonably modern and affordable turbo diesel with a simple OBD remap.



As someone who modifies cars all day long I feel qualified to say that the BMW's equipped with this engine remapped are faster than 99% of cars on the road in the real world... I own one, along with an M5. This is faster, and in most cases, significantly so. Diesels came of age about 7 years ago and are getting better and better very quickly, where as petrol technology has pretty much stagnated now in performance terms..

What engine Stu? (Capacity? ) and what car?

It would be interesting to be able to do a bhp/litre and bhp/tonne calculation for comparison with Harvey' effort.

3litre and fitted to most BMW chassis as the 335d, 535d, 635d etc etc.
As standard they are 427ftlb and 282bhp IIRC.

The "5" in the x35d designates its the twin turbo model, which is a VERY different animal to the single turbo version.
Absolutely incredible response at all throttle openings and makes over 350ftlb a tad over idle and is holding 550ftlb from around 2000rpm.

The above is remap only, no other changes. A lot more is available but the cap at 550ftlb is to ensure gearbox stays within ZF's quoted torque limit on the 6 speed box.
(For those interested, you can see its map limited by the wavy torque line as the ecu controls the output)

The thing i find with diesels is they feel quick when you're pootling about town and the torque comes in when you'd be labouring a petrol. It sort of makes you think it's quick, but when you actually open it up on a clear road the diesel revs (or lack of) show it's true 'performance' and you're left with a racket and a very underwhelming drive. And I've driven dpf deleted, remapped 6 cyl twin turbo diesel too.

What diesels are you referring to though? I cant think of many quality ones that sound anything like a diesel after 30mph unless the vac controlled dampers and acoustic covers are missing / faulty and as you can see from the graph above, many have almost 5000rpm to play with nowadays and 6 and 7 speed decent ratio boxes to make the most of it.

Of course driving a fast turbodiesel requires a very different method of driving to a fast petrol car though. Holding revs to 3500rpm and nailing it round another 3000rpm like you would in a scoob will result in a crap experience... you want to be around 1500rpm and then do the same... its a hard habit to let go of though admittedly, but once you learn to use the torque instead of relying on top end bhp to do your work you will find them a very different beast.

The one in the graph above is faster than pretty much every car I drive day to day and could NEVER be described as "Underwhelming" and ive been a petrol head all my life and have been tuning and driving performance cars 6 days a week for a living for the past 20 years... But I dont wear blinkers... I have "Fuel" in my veins, not petrol... if its fast its fast, if its not its not, I care not whether its octane or cetane powered... all that matters really is the "Area under the graph"...
