thanks! that is very true, i enjoy interfering with engines and mapping ecu's, and so will continue to do so

Hi pal, great work you're doing and a bit of inspiration really.
I'm sure the main tuning guys know what they are doing and are very well experienced but even they started somewhere.
Any links to the MS you bought, where from and prices and stuff.
Cheers Ian.

Great project and brave to think outside the box, but most people have not got the knowledge or time to do this only concern I would have would be the turbo choice maybe an 18g would be better, I would also look at a reputable one but at least you are getting a good hobby out of this hope it goes well

Keep this thread updated will you Boosted. I'd be very interested to see the outcome. Don't ignore the previous posts though will you, some need reading between the lines.. I disagree with most but I do agree about the turbo. I reckon a 16g or 18g would have been better, but hey, its your build so you do want you want to do.

thanks for the support guys, ill keep you all posted. As for the turbo my previous td04 was full boost at about 3500, but the car doesnt perform well untill 4k anyway as the boxer engine doesnt have much torque and is more prone to revving rather than producing huge torque low down. The new turbo makes good boost by about 4000rpm, around the rev range that the engine comes to life, so it works well in my experience.

Update guys, just back from mapping, after fiting my brand new AET wideband gauge, all cruise area is mapped well now, and it is mapped for upto 12psi boost, goes very well at that (better than the old turbo at 1.2 bar!) an increase to around 1.1 bar should see 320 to 340 bhp, that will be after i fit a larger capacity top mount intercooler.
Oh and its no more laggy than the old turbo, full boost at around 3800, by which time the engine is really coming into its effecient VE and starting to come on cam

Great project mate!

I've used MS on a few VAGs in the past and it is a really powerful ECU.

I use open source on my car at the moment but would love live mapping functionality. I'm going to be trying a speed density ROM this weekend once i've removed my TGVs.
Out of interest how are you controlling TGVs with MS or have you just pinned them open?

Hi, thanks for the intrest, I enjoy the tinkering more than anything, nothing bores me more than "just driving" my car. The MAP sensing is much better than the maff IMO, its far more constant and will withstand small boost leaks.
As for the TGV, this is the best thing to do with it;

Cheers lads, was out last night tuning, now running 20 psi boost, probably max I will run, the car is very quick at that, but the AFR is very rich stil. Im keeping it rich until my KS3 knock detector comes (bought off of banni on here) then i can lean it off to high 11's and look for det to fine tune the boost map.
It will be intresting to see how much power it makes on the RR.

Here is a couple of under bonnet pics, still got to make a bracket for the coil pack and edis4 module but everything else is pretty much there, note the bosch IAT sensor in the cold side of the intercooler, ive also fitted a bosch coolant temp sensor in the housing below the alternator. Also there is a 36-1 trigger wheel and VR sensor mounted on the front of the crank pulley (I machined the trigger wheel from solid at work, and made the bracket for the sensor)
Also worth mentioning i see no imediate need to upgrade my intercooler as it is coping well and the ACT is not rising much above 27 deg C.

I see the coil pack there. Can`t you use the original impreza on plug coil packs?

You sure can, but it's more work and potentialy less reliable. You have to set up the VR conditioning circuit and set the dwell up for the coils, also you need to meke an additional circuit to drive them, edis4 was the easiest and most reliable option to me.

Quick update guys, the car has now done four tanks of fuel and around 600 miles of quite hard tuning! im up at a steady 1.2 bar boost now peaking at 1.3 by about 3250 rpm, so not the laggy turbo some have portrayed! In fact very drivable in my experience.
Pretty happy with this state of tune and reading into it i can assume that it will be around 320-330 bhp, as the injectors are 75% duty cycle at 11.5:1 AFR, but i guess only a dyno run will tell!

Did it hell! I moved on to far better things! You scoobynet boys stick to your remaps and small turbos, rust brake pipes too! I'm onto a holset HX35 now 2.0 bar boost, 820cc injectors and still megasquirted

It's the only thing that would take the boost from my massive turbo! Everything else would destroy pistons, gearboxes and big ends!

For what power you are hoping ?

Agree this turbo is massive, looking like is bigger than GT35R and GT35R with right spec making on Subaru 650bhp easy

Hi Jura, I'm about 400bhp on PUMP fuel as a daily driver, big turbo helps with pump fuel bhp reliably! Low acts! Full boost by 4200rpm, all the way till 7100 limiter on 16v ABF, 85% duty cycle on 820 cc injectors!? At 11.3:1 ish. Turbo is 48lb/min cabable

I'm on a O2M 4x4 box, good for 6-700 bhp in std form, I ran a 13.1 quarter last time at drag strip, hoping for 12's next time!

Still unsure if you better choice will be GTX3076 63AR then this Holset, maybe you will gain little bit better spool up

4200RPM full boost is not so bad(although still is laggy),85% IDC you still have reserve to play

Good luck with the project

Cheers! Bare in mind I have 1 bar by 3500! It's 2.0 bar at 4200! My exhaust housing is .63 ar t3, modified by me to fit the holset, probably very similar turbo as you suggest! At a cost of only £220 ish, after running a holsetHX40 at 1.5 bar on my 2.8 24v v6 turbo that did a 12.52, I can't see past holsets!
