My Mother had Gardner ,6la i think 14 liters and 90 hp ,in the her last boat - it had been a motor fishing vessel

had the cylinder liners done when they were in Spain , bloke came all the way from Patricroft . God knows how many hours it had done , 24 hours a day for weeks on end when the boat was still fishing anyway

Better than a rolls !

Another Fab VRS here. Just gone 152k. It's had a couple of Bushes and a radiator and is only on it's second set of brakes - everything else perfect. It feels every bit as tight as our other VRS which has 18k miles. I cover 25k+ per year so i hope it will see over 200k without issue

My last two Audis were high milage and no history. 2001 audi A6 2.5 tdi that had 270,000 miles on it. sold to a mate and still going strong. Bought a 1998 Audi A6 avant 1.9 tdi and that had 390,000 when I sold it on ebay. With high milage cars you buy on condition and if your gut says walk away then do so. I'd take a punt on that bmw but would be looking to pay closer to 1200.

Audi a6's makes me think of failing starter motors, breaking deadocks so you can't open the doors and annoying break pad warning lights that don't go out when the pads are changed.

On a 11 year old a old high mile E46 BMW I'd be more worried out the state of the suspension.

They don't wear well, and go sloppy with age.

Yeah it'll still pass MOT but it'll drive/handle like a old Vauxhall Cavelier.

Then there' the silly things that go wrong like thr slip ring on the steering wheel which controls the radio/cruise control buttons, horn and airbag as well as the steering angle sensor (for the stability control).

6pot engine is pretty good though, can pop an injector causing a non-start, thermostats do stick open, amongst other trivial stuff as well as teh engine breather filter (which cause oil to blow out the turbo seals). Worst probably being the turbo giving up or inlet manifold splitting. But all of this can happen on BMWs with less than 100K

On that note NEVER touch an Audi/VW v6 diesel; especially ones with DPF (or without), unless the EGR has been disabled and inlet manifolds replaced. The older 2.5 are ok, so long as the cambelt is kept in check...let it break and you may as well scrap the car as you'll need to replace all the camshafts (they are hollow and cost a fortune).
