FAO: WRX owners - why not an STi?
#63
Bought a hawkeye WRX 4 years old. Had thought seriously about an sti originally but came down to cost. Also when I saw my WRX i had to have it as was in perfect condition with just 23 k on it which is good as I want to keep it for a good few years.

The Starlet was fairly rapid for what it is, obvously we were in different classes. I managed a 0-60 in 1.8sec, 1/4 in 13.01 @ 105 i think. Im not proud of the result, but considering I was on a stock engine, tmic, injectors etc with Vpower only, it was ok i suppose.
Im looking forward to August, as there has been a few minor changes that should get me into the mid-low 12's.

I bought a WRX as we only have one car (the Mrs doesn't drive) so needed it for the daily commute as well as all day to day trips so wanted a softer ride. Now my circumstances have changed I'm thinking of switching but want to stick with the 2 litre engine so a JDM hawkeye STI will be my next car towards the end of the year :-)

price.
Didn't have enough pence in the back pocket to pay for a STi (67k ish locally) got the WRX at a tad under 40k.
Still, now it does have the STi gearbox etc etc etc, that said, if they were closer together price wise I would've opted for a Hawk STi at the time. (if say 3-4k difference)

ive owned both a wrx and sti in hawkeye models, gotta say i aint noticed a diff in the ride although the sti has leather seats that are more bouncy, maybe thats compensated, over sti is better car though

Didnt know much about Subaru's back a few years ago, and an old coleg mate had an 1997 import whuch he'd had for a few years and was well maintained, had always said to him give me a call if he was going to get rid. low and behold 3 years ago he decided he wanted an evo 6 and i got the call and took it off his hands!!
as i say knew nothing of the differnece between Sti's and WRX's at the time, not that im no that bothered to be honest though as its plenty quick enough for what i use it for and has shown more that a few Newage Sti's(un-modded i would guess)dust on quite a few occassions!!
Just bracing myself for the eventual gearbox death, as im not the most forgiving with the car.....

Comparing a WRX to an STi is like comparing a BMW 330i Sport to an M3, IMHO.
I've owned a WRX and for me the STi is better in every way, including;
-Acceleration
-Power deliery
-Handling
-Gearbox
-Steering
-Braking
-Road Holding
-Asthetics (including bigger scoop which my neighbour believes a sniper is hiding in!)
I had a Blob WRX PPP for 2 years and my recently purchased STi outperforms in every single way. I also don't mind the more bouncy suspension, especially with the knowledge that it will grip the tarmac like a baby on a nipple.

Power atm is only 320bhp/490Nm, after the engine bits and bobs get done it should be (with any luck) at around 450bhp/650Nm.
Opted for a 6 speed because I know they are virtually bomb proof, whereas uprated 5s still go **** up far too often for my liking, never mind that the 6 speed box was cheaper than say a PPG gearset.

I bought my first Scoob in 2002, the STi had only been out a few months and was around £28k with the PPP, I couldn't stretch that far so got a Bugeye WRX instead and never regretted it until my 5-speed decided it wanted to get out!
Replaced it with a P1 box and diff and the car felt really good like that. Kept it for 7.5yrs and covered 90k miles including around 10 trackdays, CATD training course at Millbrook and numerous visits to watch the Germany WRC with the odd cheeky lap of the ring.
During the time I had it the moding bug hit and ended up with 274bhp, BC coil-overs, loads of suspension bits and bobs, morrettes, blah, blah, blah, the list wasn't massive but wasn't exactly small considering I was going to keep it standard
Was one of the best car's I've ever owned and in lots of ways I wish I had kept it, although everytime I fling the Spec C down a good country road, I realise why I sold it!
Nothing wrong with a WRX, yes the STi is better in los of areas, but not all areas! It's not in your face like an STi, still very agile but comfortable at the same time, almost as much fun on track, but with a few handling mods mine seem to do better than it had any right too and lots of people thought it was an STi.
It's not all about the speed or money, there's lots of factors and many pro's and con's for both cars! I had an absolute blast in my WRX over the time I owned it.
The WRX was my only car for 7.5yrs, when I got the Spec C I had my W reg shed of a Focus, would never leave the new car unattended, but felt less risk with the Bugeye!

for me, it was simple really - impulse buy.
I always kind of fancied a classic subaru, and when my mate let me have a drive of the one he had i decided I had to have it. the fact it was a wrx rather than sti didn't even enter my mind. still pushing about 300bhp, so reasonably quick...
