if i was you, i would make heat shield to go between the engine and filter, that runs from the left side of the rad, along the chassic leg to the suspension turret, then going up to the bonnet, with a seal there.

this will help keep the filter alot cooler than a cold air feed on its own

^ I wasn't going to say nout bout that bit,... but - without the shield most of the FMIC & induction advantage is negated. All your hard work and expense...

maybe so mate, but there is a cold air feed and tbh there are many cars running big bhp without the shield.....i dont doubt that the heat shield helps but im not going to stress over it as the front mount is still 100% better cooling than my little tmic.
logic tells me that most of the hot air from turbo will be pulled down underneath the car and from air pushing in from the scoop plus i have cold air going direct to the filter.my mapper advised me to do what i have done but didnt say a shield was required.i did say i "may" get round to it!
see what happens tomorrow during mapping.

I agree with this,i've run on mine wagon few months ago VF34 with HKS Suction kit(which seems is not the best solution, but however has been fitted) and FMIC and i've made 350bhp without the problem and at this time doesn't have any cold air feed and i've run scoopless bonnet and still i was made 350bhp.

Now i've large turbo(Blouch 3.0XT-R) and i'm not using any shield, just cold air feed and turbo blanket and time will tell how much will make, but still bhp is only great at pub, most important how car feel on road.

Anyway good luck with mapping there

Fair enough. I don't see many folk running shields, I'm just going on personal experience which is all I can. As I run Simtek there is a temp sensor just before the throttle body so shows pretty acurately what's going on with ACT's. I've posted all what's gone anyway

Here's BMW's Countryman WRC's engine bay. Not a brilliant scan, but you get the idea

Probably yes on some applications i would go with shield, but just have look at Twisted/rotated setups how many people running shield, probably just few and these guys running SimTek or Syvecs,MoTec etc.

Sometimes cold air feed its enough and sometimes will help something like you are said shield/heat barrier.

Best is find balance between these two, like i go with Cold feed and Turbo blanket and hope so will be enough.

Quite fancy an E46 M3 convertible in Laguna Seca Blue but can't justify having 2 toys. Well when I say justify I actually mean the wife did her nut when I told her I was gonna do 15 grand on another car and keep the Impreza as a hobby.

Cheers fella, just fancied doing something a little different.
Was in the garage one night doing a few odd jobs and had a few empty red bull cans on the worktop. Was gonna chuck them and thought there must be something I could use them for.

hows about classic fmic and standard airbox? im not a lover of aftermarket induction kits so managed to shoehorn the oe filter box back in by modifying the i/c pipework and making a 3" cold air feed inside the wing to the airbox.

You don't happen to have anymore info on how you managed to get the FMIC to work with the airbox do you?

if you look at the pics you can see he has modified the fmic pipeing to run underneath/behind the airbox.
