A few people above have said that no reputable company would use flex joints! I assume that BMW and Landrover are not reputable then? I've got a 2002 BMW and only just last year did the flexible joints give way, 9 years service from a flexible joint is good in my opinion.
When I had a custom downpipe made for an old car they put a flexi joint in it, never had any problems the entire time it was on.
Don't see the problem either to be honest and when you can get a complete true 3" system for around £140 if you wait for one on auction they are a steal
