Damned by faint praise, although it's only fair to point out that I'm intolerant and discriminatory with regards to fundamental Islam. And Bristolians.

however there is something beneath the surface which he needs to get out of his system
When you say "beneath the surface".....

Dialogue is the best way for this.
You could well be the man for the job, Shaid. All the very best.

Fry’s demolition of the Catholic Church (and by implication other theocratic religions) was much more than the child rape argument – profoundly shocking though that is.
The central essence, and truth of his thesis, was that the issue is really about poverty and lack of education – exploited by religion

some posters try and elevate (term used loosely) the discussion onto some sort of metaphysical layer, or what most people call the “bullsh1t” layer, when the problem is much more down to earth, and Fry obviously recognises this too

ps - thanks, good link

"The bound spirit assumes a position, not for reasons, but out of habit; he is a Christian, for example, not because he had insight into the various religions and chose among them; he is an Englishman not because he decided for England; but rather, Christianity and England were givens, and he accepted them without having reasons, as someone who was born in wine country becomes a wine drinker. Later, when he was a Christian and an Englishman, he may also have devised some reasons in favor of his habit; even if these reasons are overthrown, he, in his whole position, is not. Ask a bound spirit for his reasons against bigamy, for example, and you will learn whether his holy zeal for monogamy is based on reasons or on habit. The habit of intellectual principles without reasons is called faith."

I'd not used piston heads much but the lounge is great.

That is the new NSR, classic.

Last one out turn out the lights.

Careful. You'll get recruited as a Sith apprentice. And we know what happens to them.

Don't worry about PH. Once they are all banned they'll end up coming back here.

It is late. I am tired. I cannot be faffed reading all 10 pages of this thread tonight

For my tuppence worth, the lack of quality in the threads overall, has meant a decrease in the quantity of posts.

I'm not normally one to cause waves ( well i don't think I am :P ), but it becomes somewhat difficult not to comment on things, especially when everytime you log in, it becomes pretty monotonous to read the same people posting the same opinionated, self righteous, blatant attention seeking CRUD.

I know this isnt the only issue, but it is one which seems to be felt by a number of SN users. Obviously NSR is where almost anything goes ( within Mod reason) and people do need to post to keep things moving, but when it is monopolised by the same people it becomes dead, dead dull and people switch off.

I'm not stupid enough to think that everything should be like the 'old days'. The earth turns, things change - that is a given; however, when it starts to be a detriment, which it obviously has......

Of course NSR isn't dead!! Except this thread is still on the same page - both the main page and the thread page - as it was when I last responded two days ago. Face it, folks; it's tumbleweed time.

You're probably right Bubs. You may never make 60k.

It's like being the ageing congregation at a CofE church!

Ever been in a restaurant and seen an old married couple sit there in silence throughout the whole evening?

One could say their relationship is dead because they aren't talking any more.

However they've probably been married for over fifty years and yet they are still together; what does that tell you?

Is the relationship dead?
Or is it just that everything they talked about has already been said before and new stuff to talk about is few and far between?

Not a fair comparison, Ali - that's only two people, so of course the richness will fizzle out eventually. If you have the right mixture of people, with sufficiently different but in-tune personalities, the banter always remains fresh, no matter what the subject.
