Winter Weather 2011
#31
Just to offered a different view of the Met Office, over spring/summer I've been cycling to work somedays. I've been using the BBC forecastt (which comes from the Met Office) and I've found their Next 24 hours forecast incredibly accurate. I've been able to more or less look out of the window and see the rain fall at the time predicted (and then clear up). So much so that if it says it will be gone by 5pm, I know when I cycle at 6pm it'll be more or less dry on the ground.
Possibly being in the South East it's more predictable?
I never used to worry about weather (and still don't in general, I would just prefer to cycle to and from work in the dry), but have watched it lately and it's quite accurate.

Been following (as usual) the weekly ENSO Report from NOAA.
We are in a neutral phase, which is expected to stay +/- 0.5c for the next 2 months with a slightly higher chance of a -ve value in that time period with peak -ve values of perhaps -1.5c in towards Dec / Jan / Feb.
That means, there is a chance we could see some snow in that time period.
However, its expected later than this year.
Jan / Feb is my guess...

Apparently the brilliant on the nail autumnal Breezes weve been having are going to peter out shortly heralding an indian summer of sorts ( damn )
- they may well only have been the end of hurricanes across the other side anyway
Beyond that shirt sleeves for xmas sail and about a month of the cold stuff before we creep back up the other side - sarf coast

Or they take more care with that bit, are more bothered about it? You only have to watch the TV forecast when they travel over the country, watch it speed up as it passes over the East Coast, then slow for London and the SE
I take no notice of it. They are a bunch of scaremongering, thieving gits, only interested in pushing their stupid GW theories. Honestly, if they can't get MY weather right an hour before, how can I trust them with what MIGHT happen in 50 years?

No one can forecast the weather with any kind of certainty. The movements of weather systems is entropic and can move in any direction which cannot be foreseen completely accurately.
All the met men can do is to note all the actual reports that they get and work out with their big computers what looks like might happen. Sometimes it does and sometimes not.
That is all we can expect from the met forecasters, and believe me I have had a lifetime of dealing with that and sometimes second guessing from what I saw for myself. It is not the forecasters' fault anyway.

Then why do they call themselves 'forecasters'? Surely, 'guessers' would be a more apt description?
You have to wonder about their GW or Climate change predictions. How the hell is anyone actually supposed to believe them with their track record?

I think it is more likely to be scientists who were talking about GBW and they were doing quite well out of it too. As I understand it, GBW does exist now and that is why they have to revert to another name for it...ie Climate Change! I have heard it mentioned by weathermen however.
If you think about it, weather forecasting is necessary for many reasons since it is better to have some idea what might happen and accept that it may not be totally accurate.
It is up to us all whether we actually believe what they say of course. They can be pretty accurate about the movement of a general weather system and the air mass in which it exists ,but when it comes to localised weather it can never be easy.

High pressure and they can forecast ok
Low pressure (obviously) a different matter altogether.
Hence why they are more likely to get the South East forecast more accurate than up here en Ecosse

Best indicator is nature itself. If the wasps are tucking up early and calves are getting winter coats as newborns, then the winter is liable to be bad. Nature is more in tune than the met office :-)

Les is right. The Uk weather can be so hard to predict. We are an Island after all. We can have many Micro climates. It's time for me to get back into the weather watching as it's more interesting during the Winter.
This up coming week is bang on, as forecast by the Met office....Get ya shorts n suntan lotion out for you down Saarf.
As reported in the Pap's..there just trying to cover all outcomes..Last winter, I seen so many fronts that could cause problems, Only to fizzle out.
Chart watching here i come and will keep you all informed.

Although one radio station yesterday announced it would snow in October and be a repeat of last year winterwise. 2 hors later bbc news was advising it will be 27oC in the SE next week, so we get some good weather in spring and again in Autumn, the bits inbetween are just crap.
Hate the English weather system
