OK just read up on it, ppg power rating keeps getting lowered to avoid claims against them there are people running above 450 though with no probs.

How about this British 5spd then:

This is Albin PPG gearkit,this is rated to 600bhp+,but as you are said people running PPG above the 450bhp and i know few guys which break 6speed..

The Scoobyclinic kit seems to be decent enough, Mikey Singh has been banging in 9 sec runs with his, he did have a gearbox related problem recently but heard it did not involve the actual gearing but the casing, whether that's true or not I don't know.

All depends on what you're planning to do with the car IMO. Regular driver - 6spd, weekend/trackday toy - PPG all the way.

I've fitted PPG straight-cut synchro kit with billet forks + UK 5th to my Type R which is running 400/400, and have to say the combination of PPG ratios & DCCD running gear is awesome . The ratios are a bit taller than the original STi box and spread is perfect with the UK 5th, so you can pretend you're a rally driver going through the gears and cruise along smoothly in top.

Don't pay attention to bhp ratings, it's torque that does the damage to the drivetrain. A PPG kit properly built into a 754 casing will be fine up to around 450lb/ft, a 6spd will take a bit more abuse but is around 20kg heavier and nowhere near as much fun .

If a ppg was rated to my current power i would swap my 6speed straight away... one of the many reasons i still miss my RA

The standard PPG gearset runs a standard 5th gear cog which is why they keep breaking
6 speeds are much stronger than the 5 speed and have better gear ratio's over most 5 speed boxes, also half the price unless you buy new

thats a bit like sayign a ferrari is better than a transit.

ratios, unless your getting very serious are a personal preference, personaly i dont like 6 speed ratios, i find there just too short and im forever chagning gear.

I have straight cut PPG in a uk box. It's been ok with 400/400ish. Only issue with PPG is that different synchros are used in 3rd and 4th and both my 3rd &4th gear synchros now need replaced after not alot of miles! Will be rebuilding the box over the winter and also bolting on My GT30R so that should prove PPG's rating

Im sure JGM ran mid 600's with straight cut PPG.

Having driven a couple of 6 speeds I will be going uprated 5 speed evey time. Considering the 5 speed kit scoobyclinic sell (Albins) but heard very little feedback about it. Also I love the sound of straight cut gears

scoobyclinics kiots are getting a thorough testing by mikee lol

there proving to be pretty good, bear in mind he'll outlaunch pretty much all of us on here so i'd go with the turban test myself lol

i think the failure they had was pretty much the only origional part left int he box, sod law huh

The 6 speed IS alot better though the 5 speeds have a tendency to "flop" around more, the gates are wider (longer to change = not as quick), the main problem with the 6 speed boxes is that people cant change fast as they are not use to the closer gates (it gets easier the longer you own one ) but you should never really get caught out or find there is no gear that you need but its not there, unlike the 5 speed (none close ratio) boxes

i have found the 6 speeds notchy and the tigher gates making you miss a gear.

as said its not as simple as one ios better than the other

it just preference, i love my 5 speed and wouldnt cahnge it to a 6 speed

If you find 6 speed ratios too short, you have not driven a 2.5 6 speed box

6 speed always for me as banny said 2.5 with 6 speed and a md or gt 30-35 say no more

I cant comment on PPG's from experience, apart from reading that quite a few have failed in the past. You dont hear of many 6 Speeds going wrong.

All personal preference imho.

6 speed is fine if you have a VTEC Honda with a narrow power band/minimal torque where the closer ratios keep you in there. With lots of torque it isn't necessary as you will spend more time changing gear than on WOT. Both on road or track.

6 speed is also much, much heavier.

I'm running about 450/450 with a straight cut PPG. Built by the right people.. APi.

If I was to do it again I would go for the Scoobyclinic five speed, no question.
