People who smoke....

If someone is older I tend to think they are stuck with it and dont have the will/willpower to stop like my mum, I just cant get my head round anyone young will start as it isnt the cool thing to do any more unless I am very much mistaken.
There does seem to be a socio-economic/demographic aspect to it, not sure why its those at the lower end of the scale tend to be the ones who take up an expensive, non essential habit, back in the seventies it seemed to me as a kid that for adults to be almost compulsory !
Sorry but it does make you look a bit scrotey, especially if you try to save money by smoking roll-ups, makes you look like Albert Steptoe, it does make your clothes smell and it isnt an attractive habit, I really didnt like going out with girls who smoked, they should smell all minty, deodorised, perfumed and a hint of Cider can be alluring (makes life easier) but **** just stink.
I remember that everything used to reek of ****, the office, pubs, people, on the street, your clothes after a night out but we were kind of used to it, now I rarely get a whiff and now you see how horrible it is, it smells grim and I am glad its gone the way it has, seems almost alien to my nose now, like when someone walks in front of me when walking the dog, really spoils the air. Its a bit like when you get a whiff of the exhaust on an old car, cars smelt different to how they do now but I kind of like a Nostlagic whiff of hot Pinto Engine, also a whiff of Cigar/Pipe smoke is really nice, dont know why, think it reminds me of my grandad or going out/staying in posh old hotels as a kid, positive associations, perhaps it just smells nearer to wood smoke which we seem to be all genetically programmed to appreciate, fire=food usually so i think that may be why.

Never smoked, never wanted to. Loads of my friends smoked but just never saw a reason to.
My Mum used to smoke and she quit before I was born so that might have something to do with it.

I pulled up to a job the other day, old bloke strolled over so put my window down in my van to speak to him. He rested his arms on my door and spoke to me, I was obviously close to his face and I took a breath of what can only be described as truly disgusting, filthy, stale air from his clogged up lungs! In all my years I've never known anything like it, I could taste it for ages after and felt sick.
I don't understand how anyone can smoke, such little benefit for a lot of negatives!
I actually tried smoking a lot when I was younger and hated it, I tried to be a cool smoker when I was a kid and after trying to get into it I just don't understand how people do it.
I feel sick when I see people smoking 1st thing in the morning when they're driving to work. Bloke I used to work with told me he wakes up and 1st thing he does is smokes a ***, YUK!

Be carefull with that stuff there are side affects with that stuff, some people get them others don't.
My mate used that stuff to stop, he later started sleepwalking (which he never did before) his misses caught him trying to climb out of the bedroom window one night, his bed rooms on the second floor!!

I started a good many years ago when I was bored stiff on a train ride across Canada whic took 3 days and there were only wheatfields to look at.
There was no indication in those days that there was anything dangerous about smoking and also as a young person I have to admit that it made me feel more "grown up".
It was a big error of course and it was a real fight to give it up. Thank goodness I managed it in the end.
I would hate to have a ciggie now thank goodness and I agree that the sight of anyone with a cigarette is nothing to write home about.
I still feel conscience stricken about the unpleasantness that other people around me had to put up with when I was smoking.

Ive got a tat and I smoke. I aint been near a Job Centre since I was 18 (was made redundant for 6 weeks). Im 39. Smoking doesnt necessarily dictate demographic data.
I know its disgusting. I know it "smells". Ive done the champix. Didnt do anything for me so I couldnt stop.
For people to judge smokers as out-of-work, (scum as someone mentioned in one of the posts above), chavs, you need to look in the mirror before judging people.
Its like me saying to someone because they like a couple of cans of lager after a hard days work, to call them "a pi55 head" and that they spend more time down the pub, in the job centre, chavving it up. When in fact, they're most likely in a stressful job and need to wind down when they get home. Good on them I say.
Again. Live and Let Live. If you dont like smokers, I recommend you dont bother with anyone that smokes or better still - if you're going to run people down in a forum - do it to their face. I know what I would do. Blow smoke back in yours.

As would be expected from a dirty chavvy smoker. Ooh the irony!

going beyond this, I had a horrible 4 weeks at my father's bedside whilst he was in Intensive care, following a sudden, bizarre illness. So 8 hr stints whilst ward open each day. poor bloke was going to die, it was a question of when I guess.
anyhow: battling through the entrances of basically working class scum, in huge fog clouds of *** smoke did my fookin' head in.
even folk in pyjamas with portable drips faggin away.
this is January 2010 in horrendous snow. I could only get to the hosp and my family there as I had the scooby and 4 x 4.
and then sat in the tiny family room, taking in turns to sit with him: whilst the great unwashed poor kept rushing in and out for a ***. coming back in stinking and then going onto clinical wards spreading their germs everywhere.
and we're sat listening to them complain about doctors, or not getting updates etc . well howabout fred, billy, johnny etc didn't smoke in the first place: he might not be under going a trach and might have his throat.
all whilst their loved ones were dying in similar hospital beds just like my dad.
I guess the classic line from "yes prime minister" is something like this:
lets ban smoking.
no, we make too much money on tax.
but then there is the hospital bills treating them when they are ill.
Ah, but all things considered they die earlier, so you don't have to pay as much benefit or pension out.
and that to me sums smokers and the view of smoking.
Orwell's road to wigan pier is a good one too: "give the poor their penneth of 'baccy- as it gives them some comfort against the misery of their surroundings.

When was the last time you saw someone have a *** then go fighting everyone? Ive never even fallen over after a cigarette. Yet I hear (everyday) that someone has killed someone else after drinking, beaten up their wife and or kids, fell on a train track, drinking and driving. Hmmmm.
Drink Kills.

I don't understand why when it comes to the subject of smoking, some people have to be quite so unpleasant when giving their views. Fine, alot of people think it's a stupid/unpleasant habit and even though I smoke myself, I wouldn't argue too much about that. But I don't think there is really a need to class people as scum just because they do something you don't like.
It's not illegal, and non-smokers have to put up with it less now than ever before. I don't actually get why it bothers people so much they have to resort to comments such as scum. It might be a bad habit, but I'm not going to be labelled scum because it's a vice of mine. I work hard, I pay my way, I'm decent towards other people, hardly scum imo.
And it was touched on earlier about tax, and it's not untrue. The tax raised through smoking is around £11 billion as it stands, so like it or not, that's alot of money to make up if everyone just decided to stop. And the cost to the NHS for smoking related illnesses is nowhere near that. It's not an excuse of mine to carry on, but it is worth keeping in mind. People moan as it is about cuts/increased costs of living increases in taxes, it would be even worse if the government had to magically find another £11 billion from somewhere else.
If anything, people should be thanking us smokers for our contribution to the economy. (that's tongue in cheek if the wink wasn't enough for some people)

It has to be faced however that if you choose to live dangerously that you have to weigh it up against the possible consequences. No one should be able to order you how to run your life as long as it is not affecting others adversely of course. If you drive like a maniac you could well have a bad accident, and if you persist in smoking you have to consider the likelyhood of having a one sided interview with a consultant one day.

There you go.
In a nutshell (more so now since the smoking ban) you only really risk hurting yourself. It's unlikely somebody is going to drop down dead from passive smoking having passed someone smoking outside.

Alcohol costs the UK - 25 BILLION POUNDS PER YEAR, with over 800,000 hospital cases.
http://www.metro.co.uk/news/230760-2...-alcohol-abuse
Smoking - costs the UK - 5 BILLION POUNDS PER YEAR.
114,000 people die a year from smoking. Smokers usually go in to hospital, and come out in a coffin. Once dead, no more cost.
15,000-40,000 people die from drinking. How many times does a drinker have to go to hospital during their lifetime? (i.e. a binger) ?
Alcohol is much less taxed than cigarettes. Smokers virtually pay for their own treatment in hospital through taxation PLUS pay for non-smoke related illnesses.
I think the point is made that drinking is more harmful that smoking and that it costs YOU, the tax payer.

I think Non-smokers are a bit like Apple users. They just do not understand words like 'Freedom' and 'Choice'.
Smoking is bad for you.
Drinking is bad for you.
Working too hard is bad for you.
Working too little is bad for you.
Eating too much is bad for you.
Eating to little is bad for you.
Worrying too much is bad for you.
Fishing is very bad for you due to being the most dangerous sport.
Driving fast cars is bad for EVERYONE. (Doesn't stop most people on here does it!)
