It actually cost the nhs £2.7billion the £15billion is crime related to drinking which let's be fair will be exaggerated.

So you're comparing a total related to drinking £25billion , to just what the nhs cost for smoking £5bn.

The reason they get taxed more is that they are knowingly damaging their body in the long run which is going to put a cost on NHS eventually.

When I go out and drink ive never had to go to hospital or will need to just for having a few pints now and again.

Smoking is bad for you.
Drinking is bad for you.
Working too hard is bad for you.

Eating too much is bad for you.
Eating to little is bad for you.
Worrying too much is bad for you.
Fishing is very bad for you due to being the most dangerous sport.

Driving fast cars is bad for EVERYONE. (Doesn't stop most people on here does it!)

Erm yeah ok then... Thanks for the pointless apple analogy . You're not very good at this trolling thing are you.

Let's not go too far down the road of minimising the cost of these things to the tax-payer. Life could get pretty boring.

Does being a smoker make you selfish too?

Seeing as if you do get terminal ill, it's the family around you that have to cope/help and face the fact they could lose their mum or dad at the age of 40

To be honest I'm pretty vocal to my friends about my distaste for smoking.

They now know not to come near me with a *** or they will lose it. It's a happy understanding

Strong views emerging, what did I start.

The main point of this thread was to show how people who do something of their choosing are regarded by those who choose NOT to do the same activity. Be it drinking, smoking, being pierced and tattooed, or even their choice in mobile phone lol.

Peoples own perceptions will always be guided by the choice they made at the start.

Tattooing (quality ones) - Love it
Piercing - No interest
Drinking - Pointless, but have been wasted
Smoking - Never done it, bizarre activity IMO
Drugs - Why !?

And so on. All just my opinions. But amazing how strong the words used to describe people who make different decisions to us can get.

I've always considered smoking to be a selfish and stupid act personally.

I worked out that at the current rate someone I know has spent over £30k on **** in his life time. In return for that he got himself a triple heart bypass.

I'm a smoker yet I hate the smell. If I am walking along and a smoker blows smoke in my direction I hate it................. My wife hates smoking full stop!!

I smoke anything between 5-15 a day. Depending on what I am doing.

I first starting smoking way back when I was hanging out with friends at school, parties etc to be part of the crowd. So was only the odd one here and there by the age of 18. Most of them are non smokers yet some of us still are?

Also I was with my ex who got me into smoking on a more regular basis as she was like a chain smoker . Yet I now know she has quit?

I need/want to quit and now being that you cannot smoke in pubs or resturants (to which I prefer even as a smoker) but most of all my kids. Have now caught me chuffing on a snout a few times and my oldest (4 years old) kept asking me what it was and can he do it!!!

I felt so cheesed off with myself for letting them see me having a toe rag etc. As I don't want them to smoke whne they are older. Also the cost of the things have shot up.

Would be interesting to know people who have met me in person off of here and other forums see me as when I smoke a ciggie and when I not smoking?

I've worked with a few people who use chewing tobacco. Now that is a disgusting habit....always spitting it everywhere, massive gob fulls.

But you bring it on yourself!

My point is that there are many things in this life that are bad for you. I do not feel the need to press my views onto others (except about Apple of course!).
As long as people don't blow their ciggy smoke in my face or smoke around my son, I couldn't care less.

Also, how will smokers cost the NHS more in the long run when they are are all supposed to die young? Think about it. All the tax they pay on ****, income tax and NI and they won't be around to claim any of it back!

For people to judge smokers as out-of-work, (scum as someone mentioned in one of the posts above), chavs, you need to look in the mirror before judging people.

Its like me saying to someone because they like a couple of cans of lager after a hard days work, to call them "a pi55 head" and that they spend more time down the pub, in the job centre, chavving it up. When in fact, they're most likely in a stressful job and need to wind down when they get home. Good on them I say.

Never smoked in my life (But have 2 tattoos)
When I was out on the pull, If I saw a woman that I really fancied, then saw her light up, I would no longer be interested. I have always found it the biggest turn off there is.

Some of you have clearly never sampled the unadulterated pleasure of a Montecristo no.3. Crack's rather nice, too.

When you see people freezing their **** off outside to have a smoke, that's when I think they can sometimes go down in your estimation subconsciously. They've actually put whatever they were doing on hold to go and stand outside just to get a fix of something they obviously can't do without. Seems a bit pathetic in a way you'd never realise when people were allowed to smoke in public places.

Thought I'd just throw that out there.

What proportion of smokers wish they could give up their addiction?

Certainly not a "hater" of smokers, but wouldn't allow people to smoke in my house and always detested the smokey nature of the local pub and the need to wash clothing after! Yay the ban on smoking in public places!

When I was in my teens used to smoke the occasional cigar though!

Alas, I've only had the odd Montecristo but very nice they were - even from a non-smokers point of view (can one be classed as a non-smoker even having had a cigar a few times but never a cigarette?).

I once bought a box of cigars from a Native American in San Antonio (Texas, not Spain) after watching him roll them in his shop - fecking HUUUUGE they were and took forever to smoke!

Haven't had one for nearly 10 years now....

Really miss a good pill. Given up with modern rubbish - full of plant food and glass!

I actually like having a ciggie now and again. I don't smoke during the day, never in the car, never in work and never around the nipper. I like to have one or two of an evening particularly if I'm watching a film with a glass of Southern and Coke. This Southern and Coke is my only nod to alcohol and don't touch anything else. I dislike drinking intensly.

Pack of 20 tends to last me at least a week. I go for days without one and actually forget the last time I had one. But I like having one now and again.

I smoke **** like some smoke spliffs - kind of like a treat to look forward to at the end of the day.

I also have a tattoo if that helps - although I'm told its too small to be officially hard.

I though horse riding was about the most dangerous sport, not fishing.

By the way smoked like a trooper till 2005 - haven't touched one since but I do enjoy a few beers! And driving fast! And cycling fast

apparently they have done studies around the psychology of smoking and its role in “social” groups

and the conclusion was, that if you are in need of help, say a push for your car or a pair of jump leads, or help breaking into your car/house etc (due to lost keys) you are much better off approaching a smoker, if you have a choice of potential helpers

as they a much more likely to help you, -- the conclusion being smokers are much more used to social interaction with strangers etc ("have you got a light" etc)

interestingly -- the worst group were snetters, who would, in most cases tell you to fvck off

Smoking - costs the UK - 5 BILLION POUNDS PER YEAR.

114,000 people die a year from smoking. Smokers usually go in to hospital, and come out in a coffin. Once dead, no more cost.
15,000-40,000 people die from drinking. How many times does a drinker have to go to hospital during their lifetime? (i.e. a binger) ?

Alcohol is much less taxed than cigarettes. Smokers virtually pay for their own treatment in hospital through taxation PLUS pay for non-smoke related illnesses.

I think the point is made that drinking is more harmful that smoking and that it costs YOU, the tax payer.
It is all harmful in excess of course, but easier to keep drinking down to a harmless level if you use a bit of common sense.

Harder to do with smoking of course.

+2 to that .

I started smoking at 9yo due to hanging around with an older group, thus i ended up in the thick of it and dare i say it? i also got well into drug's but left the brown stuff well alone. I finally managed to kick the drugs in 2005 after two scare's and havent touch'd or dealt them since. I don't drink but i still smoke, i don't think its worth me giving up **** after nearly 20years of smoking (including bongs upto 2005). The way i see it for me is that either way i am numbered and my body is fcuked and @ 28 i should have another good 7 years left before the past catches up with me so carry on smoking i shall. I don't particulary fancy getting old on this godforsaken craphole of a world.
