They do with the right tyres and a driver with half a brain cell.

Bit unfair to blame the Met men completely when the forecast turns out to be wrong.
The weather depends on so many variables, movement of air masses, height of the tropause, temperature inversions or not, relative humidity, movement of the polar front, relative pressures which affect the wind strength and direction, air mass temperature to name but a few.
All the meteorologists can do is to take all the readings, and determine what might happen helped by the computer software.
If everything remains stable then they have a half decent chance of getting it right. All those items are entropic in character in that no one can be certain that they will remain constant and many of them can change for no good reason. That is why forecast weather can change by the time it arrives of course.
Weather is also affected by local conditions and that can also ruin a forecast unless a locally based metman gets a chance to say his bit with the benefit of his knowledge.
Basically the met office is often on a hiding to nothing and it is not necessarily their fault.

Even nicer today, in fact I've had to come back in to avoid getting burned.
Shame I have to avoid beer!
