The WRX left the factory pretty much crippled so as not to get anywhere near STi territory in lots of ways.....transmission, brakes, interior and the rest.
The Denso ECU on the WRX is very capable but left the factory in a similar crippled state, mapped for a huge amount of safety, low boost and lots of fuel thrown in to avoid det and aid cooling for crap fuel.
In my opinion for the WRX with mods, dual maps are not really necessary......just get it mapped for max fuel / ignition/ boost efficiency and to save fuel just pootle around
It's what I do

again appreciatte the excellent advice given !!
one thing did ask in another thread if my 2005 wrx is maped with / for V power fuel is it dangerous to use anything else if you were to say ever get caught out and had to use some other type off fuel although obviously still using best grade available be in tesco / BP or wherever ??
sorry to the OP poster off this thread kinda taken over your thread mate, but no doubt you are out enjoying your cars new performance anyway !!

My car is mapped for v-power and if I get stuck I have a bottle of NF in the glove compartment which I can stick in if I get caught near a BP Ultimate garage LOL
The WRX runs pretty well unstressed even if mapped properly so unless your mapper has mapped it on the "knife edge" then the odd half tank of BP shouldn't be a problem..

Okay again thanks for that, making a few notes here and will check with my mapper at time off getting it done, just nice to know whats what before I go for it !!
in your opinion does a remap on a wrx improve mpg figures again providing the extra performance is not used ??

When I had my first map with Bob Rawle back in 2003 (I think) he did say how rich the car was running....step back 10 years and John Banks ran an article in True grip on how the ECU ran a lot of fuel to keep things cool.
Seems to be a pretty consistent feature of the factory subaru to run rich to prevent det and mapping errodes this safety feature and the trade off is more power / torque on boost and better fuel economy off boost.
Having said that mapping ups boost and advances ignition so that the ECU throws in a lot of fuel (power) and economy goes pants LOL

or do you say sell up time to go for something a bit more econmical ??!!
indeed the op has admitted having twin maps on his car- should we not tell him the same - whats the lower boost map for mate ?? - economy - ah well if you cant afford to fuel your car then sell it !!
besides dont see how spending on a second car with a second mot / insurance and fuel is going to save you money- maybe in the long run yes but some of us are happy to run a scooby as an everyday car but again its just a sad fact off life that with fuel being the way it is we cant always drive the car as we would want to !!
which is maybe a good thing- you think your licence would last long if petrol was cheap ??!! I know mine would not !!

The dual map does help with economy, it ensures you do not run into any of the rich (for power) zones of the map. You could of course achieve a similar result by watching your boost gauge and continually backing off the throttle as you approach '0.x' bar of boost.
