Not quite true. You're unlikely to get it as part of your standard road insurance, but it's perfectly possible to get (for example) day insurance for the 'ring. It just has a significant premium and/or excess.

Correct, they will have to cover the 3rd party costs.

They are almost guaranteed to take him to court though and re-claim any payout from him.

Yes, you're right.
Although usually only covered for organised track days and not TF days?

For such a large amount Id be surprised if they didnt Gary. Thats why I suggested that he starts to make the right moves now; because if he doesnt then he will probably lose his whole life - wives and children usually follow houses.

Time to take out an accomodation address for yor V5 and insurance and change your name by deed pole.

I would happily insure your Cayman for a TF day at the Ring. Simple premium - £100*

* The £100 premium comes with a with a £50,000 excess.

And then be on the run for the rest of his life?
To be honest, if he can afford an M3 CSL with suspension and brakes upgrades and then regular trips to spank it around the ring, I'm sure he could pay off the 130,000 euros over a couple of years.

Rather that than constantly running from your troubles.

My Cayman?
You're on!

Oh, I haven't got a Cayman....

Gearhead - an M3 CSL can cost as low as £20k ish - even with a few mods and 3-4 trips to the 'ring doesn't mean he could necessarily afford a €130k bill!

Damage caused to what though? Only seen vid on an iPod so difficult to make out.
Is the ring really a public road? Not a private track?

They probably should but then the Nordschliefe is a public toll road on TF days.

His CSL was only 6 months old and had around £5000 worth of upgrades.

Was worth just a tad more than £20k!

Damage to other cars (i assume he hit the white Porsche), armco, track closure, and any personal injury involved.

The 'public toll road' is a very grey area. Unfortunately (for the M3 driver) an insurance company refused a Nurburgring claim a while ago and the insured driver took them to court. The judge knew what The Ring is, and threw the case out.
Therefore any insurers refusing to pay can use that as an example, and get out of a claim if it goes to court. (aswell as providing pictures and videos to any judge to show exactly when the Nurburgring is)

I thought they stopped making the CSL in 2004(ish)?

But, everyone knows the risks when you go to the Ring.
Exactly the reason why I hired a car when I went... €8k excess I can live with, €130,000+ doesn't even bear thinking about.

The issue of insurance is an interesting one though as I believe the UK is the only country in the EU that seems to get away with excluding the Nordschliefe from insurance policies (yes, technically, they would still have to pay BUT they will take you to court to recover their costs).

My wife's side of the family are from Sweden and their insurance companies have no problems covering the Ring - it's just treated as a public road as it is by insurance companies in Germany, France, etc..... interestingly though, drivers from the UK do have a reputation for crashing at the Ring according to my brother-in-law and the other Swedes I was there with so perhaps the insurance companies' position is not entirely unjustified.

That's what I thought. So maybe not a CSL then.
Just quoting what I was told.

They can't refuse to pay out the 3rd party claims under EU law so the other parties are covered (as they should be - it is a public road after all) but they won't pay out for 1st party claims and they will attempt to get that money back.

As you say though, if the insurers show some footage to a judge, it's not hard to prove that the Ring is not a normal toll road even if it is classified as one on TF days under EU law.

TBH we all know we're not properly covered on general UK insurance on TF days at the Ring and should know the risks. Ultimately, a TF day is about the experience - if you want to max it at the Ring, book a track day where you're not liable for track damage or other cars and you can easily get cover for your car if you want to.
