When a DMF starts to wear out it sends bits of **** everywhere. Sometimes it can be bad enough to jam the starter motor. The clutch may well have been changed recently, but, the crap from the DMF may have ruined it. It may not have ruined it also, but as the car is in bits the garage should suggest changing it to be on the safe side. It should have been your decision though.

Pass on that one. I'm not disputing the dual mass flywheel needed fixed just didn't think the clutch would need done too as it was recently replaced. Not disputing the drive shaft - if it needed done then it needed done. If the tyre needed changed then fair enough but I didn't authorise it and could have done it myself cheaper. As for the cutting out, it was not cutting out when I gave it to them so surely its something they have done and not my issue.

Diesel fuel pumps can be expensive. Friend of mine paid 450 for a 4x4 jap diesel one recently.

speak to them then, sure you can come to some agreement on it.

If they wont budge then start looking at other options, citezens advice would be the best place for advice, they will be full up to date with the law on this sort of thing, us lot are just guessing on the main lol

Fair enough, Probably the best thing to do. Try to come to some sort of arrangement if I put my points across. Hopefully they either a) dont baffle me with technical mechanical bull or b) refuse to budge and I have to go to citizens advice / trading standards (which I really don't want to do)

not always. they give up. If it happens to give up at a garage you think "their fault" but it could have just packed in.

Imagine they'd taken it in just for the clutch and the DMF had gone on the road test after, you'd think they did it but in reality it is an unrelated event.

That said, I think the fact they have kept calling back is a bit of a funny one. also, if the post about this being a bad design, then they might well have damaged the driveshaft. This is a garage you could get to not one that knows these cars at all so they might have screwed it up a bit and are asking you to pay for that mistake.

The charge for the tyre, which is pricey and something you didn't ask for deffo makes me suspicious about the other work.

I'd press them that you cover parts and they cover the labour themselves (as a mininmum) as they've done work you didn't want/need and used over priced bits to do it.

5t.

If you didn't authorize the work then don't pay for it. Tell them to undo the items that you didn't approve & you'll pay for what you did. If they refuse, get the fuzz involved. If the fuzz aren't interest (civil matter sir ) then you'll need some burly lads to get it back ...

TX.

PS. As above, does this sort of thing really happen these days?! Garages that I use always quote for the work up front then call if anything else needs doing.

If the car is taken without paying the bill that will certainly interest the fuzz as its theft.

How does that work when it's your car and they are holding it againt you is that not theft by them then?

You are in your rights to get them to put it back the way it was and pay for the work you asked them to do only.

Most garages I have worked in will sort you out with some way of paying it with a large discount on the labour or maybe pay a bit this month then a bit the next month, but until you talk to them and explain your case and that they should of asked first about the other items fitted you won't know just ask them..

I think they are attempting to take you for the mother and father of "rides"!

If I ever do get a job done by a garage I always insist on being given the old parts which you are entitled to do since they initially belong to you anyway.

Can they actually prove that they have fitted all those parts and done the work I wonder.

I think that all you can do is to kick up a hell of a fuss and try to come to a fair arrangement for the bill.

Les

Default clutch and cost of repairs

My information is that if you PAY for the job you own both the new and replaced parts, so YES you can have the old parts.

time for court.

sounds like a monkey has taken a sledge hammer to your car mate.
years ago, i had a 205 gti that had to have the clutch replaced..

it was a nightmare of disasters and damage...two clutches, car catching fire, everything...eventually id had enough and they gave me a bill for £80 for yet another clutch cable..the previous new one had been totally bodged and had snapped where it had been pulled through the bulkhead..there was supposed to be a protective rubber grommet, but theyd fkd it so the cable was rubbing on bare metal (that had been cut like a cheesewire)..they put the gearstick linkage on back to front, so when driving the gear stick simply fell apart etc etc..

one time i picked the car up and there was oil all over the interior and leather seats...i complained, and the pickey fukktard boss told a grunt to clean it..fat **** pulled his kecks up and waddled out to my car..then proceeded to wipe cellulose thinners over the leather and red carpets!! fkn idiot...he started stripping the tanning from the leather and bleaching the carpets..arseholes...
so one day, i went to the garage, saw it on the drive and simply took it..it as going in for MOT so i just took it to the MOT garage.
on the way there i got chased by a cop..turns out theyd reported it (hadnt phoned me though)..i got arrested for 'proprietry theft)..ie, nicking their fitted parts. fortunately, i was right outside the MOT garage and the car was in the book.

upshot? well, i had to pay the bill even though i had the sympathies of the cops..

weird thing happened though...

some crafty fkr repeatedly smashed all his windows and the place got vandalised several times..graffit everywhere...even the owners car got covered in brake fluid...mustve been hell for the scumbag, theiving owner who kept stealing money from me.

little over a year later, the place went out of business.

Just thought i'd close this one off if anyone is interested in the outcome. Got car back over weekend. Had a civil conversation with the owner, raised my concerns / issues. He appreciated my point of view. Parts were charged at cost price and did not add VAT to the invoice. £700 came off the bill. Still an expensive breakdown but alot less than it could have been.
