right then i suppose i'd better give you all a bit of an update.

So having finally received my gaskets and asking a couple of questions about the block half o rings i proceeded to build the bottom end with some o ring oil seals i had acquired locally, feeling rather chuffed with myself at the time, but later in the following days i started to second guess myself, as often happens to me, something wasn't sitting right in my mind about the torque settings i had used on the rods.

In the mean time the oil seal parcel turned up and the block half o rings looked different, so that put the seal on it, excuse the pun, but it had to come apart as i'm really trying to make sure i get it right.

And i'm pleased i did because as i was doing this i noticed that like a proper numpty i had managed to put one of the pistons the wrong way round. Doh!, and apart from that even though i had been what i thought was very spareing and careful with the sealant there was a couple of bits that were obscuring the edges of the bearing oil ways, which at the very least would not be good for flow.

So the good news is that its all back together, i did actually make another mistake while i was putting the heads on, but i won't tell you what that was, maybe some of you can guess, but all i will say in my defence is that i had a very heavy night the night before to celebrate my success and really should not have been in the garage for the first couple of hours, but it being a sunday i had the place to myself and wanted to crack on.

The old saying haste makes waste springs to mind

Anyhow it's now half in the car after a couple of days and a few delays due to dodgy looking hose clips and missing bolts which i knew weren't there when i took it out, but at that time my priority was to get it out and stripped, it's also a bit tricky putting an engine in on your own.

Today i put the inlet manifold on and routed the loom as well as putting the power steering pump and aircon on only did a couple of hours as had to go to the shops for bits and i had a stinking headache when i got back, too much thinking is not good for me..

Big day tomorrow

What a pain in the a$$ working on subarus, had some fun today.

Put the rad on filled up with coolant and stuck some oil in then put the battery on and turned it over without the plugs in and hey presto oil pressure up to 7 bar on the guages, and no loud noises, so after about an hour faffing with spark plugs and double checking everything i thought i would try and start it.

And guess what SHE'S ALIVE

How long for remains to be seen, but for a little while it was running while i primed the turbo and sounded ok.

So then the rest of the day has been spent trying to get the Foofin barstuard of a turbo oil return pipe in, what bloody fun and games that is along with getting the plugs in which is a pain in the ***, i was going to put them in before i dropped the engine in but thought it better to turn it over without any compression considering it's the first time i have built one..

Any tips for getting the turbo oil pipe back on greatly received, as tomorrow i think i will take the headers off to get at it

But as i sit here typing and sipping a beer i'm feeling better and think i might even get to go for a first run up the road tomorrow if i ever get it back together again.

Great work mate, glad your getting there. In guessing the £400 is more like 1200 now though

I think it is closer to £700 in real terms as that is just parts, and i still need to get some good oil so with that and traveling about to get parts, but not too bad if it holds together..

Spent the morning taking the headers off so i could get at the oil return pipe, and got that on and sorted, then put everything back together, double checked everything then fired her up again gulp..

Had a few tentative moments of listening to piston slap, but it quietend down after a couple of minuites, then some smoke rising from the right hand side had me worried, as it was coming from the water pump area and made a bit of a squeling sound so switched off quick smart and did some investigating.

Removed the right hand side cam belt cover to get a look at the water pump, and all appeared well, so i took the **** it or fix it approach and fired up again.

Now that i could see things a bit better i figured it was the oil off my muccy mits on the headers burning off so held my nerve, and sure enough it was, then the same thing started to happen around the turbo so got some light on the job, but it was again just everything getting hot and burning greasy paw prints, so after a few more nervous moments with the heater on full bore squeezing hoses and topping up the coolant all appeared well.

Was revving quite high, so gave the throttle a bit of a blip to try and settle it down, everything was getting up to temp nicely and let the oil warm and gave it a bit of a rev, which helped it calm down further on tickover, fans well one fan kicked in, not sure whats going on with the other one, but not too worried about it for now as it's winter.

Then came the moment of truth, popped it into gear and off i went up the road for a couple of hundred metres, and everything seems ok, so cabletied a few bits put the strut brace back on and in the morning i shall refit the bumper and the lights and take her for a bit of a spin for a couple of miles and see how we go. phew!!!

Went out for a 10 mile run after fitting bumper, lights ect and all seems ok, took it nice and easy at first not going over 3k rpm, stopped a couple of times just to be on the safe side and make sure nothing un to ward was happening under the bonnet.

Then went to my trusty **** it or fix it ethos, as if it's going to go **** up i'd rather it happen now than when cruising through the alps, so gave it a bit of gas up to 4k rpm being gentle of course, then after doing that a couple of times i took it up to 5k rpm a couple of times which it didn't seem to mind, then i thought best not to push my luck too much until i've done a few more miles and everything has settled down a bit.

I'm not sure what the general opinion is, but my thinking is if somethings going to go wrong it will probably do so in the first few miles, so with this in mind i shall be taking it for a bit of a run tomorrow of 50 or so miles then drop the oil and get some fully synth in there, and then head back to blighty on thursday stopping of at milan for a night with a mate, as i also don't want to put 1300 miles on in one hit, so i recon 500 to milan is a good shake down before i head up to switzerland, germany, belgium, france and home

Good effort it's nervewracking when you rebuild your own motor and run it for the first time. I recently did this with my own forged 2.5 and so far so good 1500 miles later.

Almost i put the rear oil seal in too far back and had a bit of an oil leak, but she held together with a bit of topping up and all is good now, i could run it but the rods and crank are not up to my plans.

But as you know i started breaking it, sold a load of bits then changed my mind and decided to keep it, i just can't bring myself to sell my baby, so its tucked up in the garage until i have time and funds to do a 2.1.

I've got a blob wagon ppp for reasons of practicality as well now and put a few bits on that, and ill be stripping the type r engine to get the wiseco pistons out of it, then re using the eagle rods ect to do a forged build for the wagon, just because i have the parts and its a good bit of practice, i also have another 04 a spare block so it would be rude not to.

I quite like building engines, i find it quite satisfying, and now i have half an idea how to do it i'm going to run with it and see how it goes.

Thanks again for the help and advice.

I'm not supprised it's like the amazon in your garden.

Engine building is just like mapping, a load of fuss about nothing.

I think a lot of the "oooooh you don't want to do it like that" stems from the early days when loads got it wrong and everyone was was trying to work out how to mod and map these cars and loads went pop.

Nowadays there is so much information out there that if you have half a brain and take your time/ do your research anything is possible for the DIYers and tight wads like you and me.

I'm back on monday so might give you a call and you can pop round for a coffee and ogle me aladins cave, and i'm talking about me garage so don't get any funny ideas.
