You won't be offered the best deal over the phone with a part-ex the salesman hasn't seen.

If you want the BEST deal, you are going to have to put in some effort I'm afraid.

The only way the salesman will know you are serious, is if you are in front of him and making him feel like you are going to sign an order form while you're there.

Anyone else is just a time waster (which they see a lot of).

I'd visit at least visit three dealers and go with the lowest price to change. Oh and take the RFL out of yours when you drop it off. They are buying your car, not the tax ;-)

Ah, now it makes sense.

The broker made £80 over his cost price (probably an admin fee + his commission from the deal which would range from £300 to £600 generally.

The VAT part is soaked up by the company actually supplying the car, i.e Ford Finance.

Ford would have still made their full profit margin

Why would xmas eve make a difference ? It amazes me how some people think there are massive margins in vehicles! Also ignorance & arrogance shown towards dealers & there staff!
You wouldnt speak about someone that worked in a retail outlet like that.
To the op, do your research & go into a couple of dealers, if they'll match your online quote deal there & then & dont waste the rest of your weekend trawling round garages wasting your time. If you like the showroom, car, deal & feel the salesman is trying for your business then give him it. The sales guy doesnt get paid until the car goes out & might even get a bonus based on your csi score.
Remember glasses is only a guide, if there credible they'll research your car & pay current market value for it. Your px is exposure & will only go to auction.

Best of luck, the salesmen & managers are only doing there job if you remember this it will stand you well.

Great comment, and exactly right.

I have purchased quite a few new cars over the last few years and I do my research and then go and speak to the dealers, I have never failed to reach a mutally agreeable cost with them with my extras etc all worked into the final price to pay.

Steve

Sorry Steve but I didn't pick up on the fact you have a px.

Saying that it amazes me how little attention MAIN dealers actually pay to the condition of your px, its almost as though they don't care as long as the price they offer is in line with company rules and you buy a new car.

What I mean is when I pxed my M5 recently it had a major vanos problem that would have cost me (obviously not them) about £3.5k to fix. There were also loads of other 'issues' with the car that he could have used to knock the price of the car down. But the salesman just gave the car a superficial look over, don't forget the long engine on this car would cost a punter £20k to replace.

The engine obviously wasn't running properly, sounded wrong and didn't perform the way it was meant to. There were even error messages logged on the ECU if they had bothered to look but they didn't.

I presume the salesman wanted to shift a new car and that was more important than anything else. I also got him to match the internet drive the deal type best price.

Sorry I've gone a bit off topic!!

I personally think the salesman was a litle haphazard & was just wanting to get the deal done. I know from experience that a few times when i have been trading in high end vehicles the deal & px price can be subject to a workshop check. I usually dont have an issue because at the end of the day they are a business, so have to protect themselves.
I would & have done the same when buying / selling machinery in the past.

Actually you have every right to say you are unhappy with the price as by law they can not dictate how much something is worth ONLY advise a price.

Have you not gone to currys and purchased a laptop but asked for a deal... £20 off on the last one I purchased.. Don't ask you dont get.

And at Xmas car sales men still have targets... and they wanna hit them.. But most people are buying other gifts so they can be more flexible.

The deal they're offering you is such a one-off, bargain, never to be repeated, massive discount, we don't offer this to every customer, not normally obtainable price, that if they offered it to everyone the dealership would be bankrupt within a fortnight. That's why it has to be sanctioned by 'the Manager'

If a car dealer tells me he needs to speak to the manager I walk away. Clearly I am negotiating with the wrong person.

It's a stupid sales tactic where they go and stand in the coffee room for two minutes and pretend they have done a deal on your behalf. Nothing more than to get leverage with you.

OP have you tried autoebid.com

I got a very good deal on a Suzuki Swift Sport a few years ago when both my local dealers flatly refused to do a deal. I got 14% which when they first came out was a pretty good deal.

That's nowt. Being the ******** with money that he is, my mrs younger brother just forked out £8,000 on a 08 plate 1.3 Corsa diesel. It was from a dealer, covered in scratches (is black) inside and out, high miles... And the best bit is after 5 years on finance he will pay back nearly £13,000

Fcukin' ***!! And on this he's paying £1500 insurance at 23! He thought the more expensive quote would mean he gets better cover

ok ive bought 4 cars in the oast 4 years

2 scoobys 2 vauxhalls so heres my advice as its ford

Whatever they quote you hammer them down, both Vh and FD can be nailed down LOADS,

examples I got an Insignia SRI NAV 160 fully loaded 20 inch wheel VXR kit etc 23k it was up for i walked out 18k.

Ive just bought the wife a meriva SE fully loaded after all extras it came in at 21.7k LOLs i walked out with it for 15k intrest free

so the game go to dealer one get a price for yours and a price for the new model tell him your going to think about it and tell him not to dick about ( not in as many words but be straight to the point ) then go to dealer 2 once you start throwing exact numbers at him hell start to work with you, even go to dealer 3 and try again

Ive done it ewith all my cars and its worked

my last STI saloon out of 6 scooby dealers some of them very well known on here all stood there ground only 1 MKAR in rochdale came through and crushed the numbers so down to the metel i accepted, one old dealer actually thought they had made a mistake

I've never read such bollix in my life! He's telling you a crock of ****.
Do you know what their registration bonus was at the time per car?
Do you know what their back end bonus was at the time?
What about their Csi/Cem bonus per unit?

I'd tell you to **** off somewhere else, unless you're buying a big 4wd with £5000 profit in it. Also, cash will not get you a bette deal, as that will make less commission. Finance and products will get you the best deal as theres more commission for the business!!!

Salesmen get paid on the profit in the car. If there isn't any, the salesman gets no commission. Neithe does the manager.

Do you work for free? Cos I don't!

More likely the salesmans 'disposable margin' has already been used, and he has to go with the begging bowl to his manager. The truth that a lot of people don't understan is that salesmen are on your side! If you don't buy anything they won't get any commission!

Unreal. A fool and his money are easily parted! A guy I used to work with paid something ridiculous like £15k for a 1.2 Punto (including finance costs). He was always complaining about how little cash he had, as if he didn't get paid enough.

Latest word on this...

He's realised he got bent over backwards, lubeless, and is now trying to arrange a bank loan to pay a settlement figure of...

£9,500

Only thing is he has no credit history bar an overdraft so they'll (Lloyds TSB) only give him a £9k credit card not a loan. He thinks it's great idea even though a credit card from them is like !8.9-19.9% APR

How these people get on in life bewilders me Her mum's just a thick too - proper retarded. Won't go on trains - scary, won't go on planes - too scary, have to stick to 45-50mph as it's too fast otherwise. How she bared children I'll never know. Nat know's if she ever turns out that thick we're over

Unbelievable.

Oh I know plenty around my age too. That guy I mentioned above was in his 40s! But a few years ago some people I knew had just finished apprenticeships/were newly qualified etc and were earning ok money, but they were in debt up to their eyeballs. They couldn't understand where they were going wrong.

Some people should be kept in bubble where all knowledge of credit cards is concealed from them!

Going back to the 40 year old... him and his family have never had anything, never will. Lives in a rented council house. If anything happened to him tomorrow his family would starve (if it wasn't for benefits). But with the income he's had over the years he could easily have done things differently. **** me, listening to these people is like reading the Daily Mail... except it isn't exaggerated for effect, the stupidity is 100% real. AHHHH

Yep, totally agree. Her mum cries poverty every month. She works as a carer for old people (which apparently she's good at - must be the ONLY thing) full time, so min wage is about £750 a month bring home. She has no idea where it goes ****, chocolcate, sweets and other crap is the answer. 2 cash machines. One is free and 500 yeards from her home, one is 300 yards and charges £1.95 per transaction. Guess which she uses? Again, 2 shops where said machines are located, one is closer and obscenely expensive...but she wastes £££ every day. Then when somethings wrong with anyone else, she bellows up with her milk udders for **** and whines she's got a bad this, a bad that. I swear I've never wanted to punch someone as much as her. She tried telling me that smoking when she was pregnant made her kids healthier. So when I requested she not smoke around my son she went ape. I told her in no uncertain terms if I ever caught her smoking near my son or found out she had, I would personally bury her. She started crying the stupid bitch, not understanding why it's so important? Here's a clue, I'm asthmatic due to second hand smoke

Anyway, she's 8 miles away burning something in the oven (she cooks a sunday chicken for about 9 hours) so no need to fill my cranium with spackmongtards like her.

If there experienced then they'll know that November & December are the quietest months of the year & targets will be adjusted in relation to that.
