If a young lad of 17 is quoted £5,000 to insure a £500 Corsa then a fine of £150 and 3 points plus the loss of a £500 car is small beer.
£650 versus £5,000 ......
He goes out and buys another Corsa for £500 and off he goes again .....
Eventually, he loses his Licence ... he is completely lawless now and drives with no Tax, no Insurance, no MOT, maybe drunk .... nowt to lose anymore.
I'm not defending it, on any level - BUT, I believe the Government should insure these youngsters - for a reasonable charge (only cars in groups under 3) ..... i'm sure it would be cheaper than the costs involved otherwise.

The 3rd party inclusion like in Japan wouldn't work over here, as it's the PI claims (ie the 3rd party cover) that is increasing the costs.
The actual amount of claims has reduced.... it's the increase costs that are killing the market.
What used to be a £1000 claim to fix a damaged car is now a £6000 claim, as there is normally a £5000 PI claim included. (£2500ish for the person that got hit, and £2500ish for the PI company 'helping' them)

Complete BolI0cks. After doing a 12 hour night shift on a Saturday night, try getting a bus in rural Lincolnshire for a 35 mile trip at 5am Sunday morning.

Still a big percentage of foreign plated cars here not insured/taxed/mot'd. They just go 6/7 up in a beaten up Audi to work.

well I live in Bradford and we have the top 5/6 UK postcodes for un-insured drivers: something like places, 1,2,3, then its Birmingham, then places 5,6.
last count- 27,000 uninsured cars on the road here.
ins has risen 68% in this city !!!!!!!!
so yes- seize the cars, crush them and shoot the driver in the face.
you should try driving here: you might as well be playing a game of grand theft auto trying to get from a to b.
saw a convertible lambo on the back of police truck last week, with no ins stickers on it and a couple of sheepish yoofs stood by it. innit.
thing is, its not even one off's- you see it virtually daily sadly.

He has to have the car as he works shifts and rarely uses the car for anything else as he cant afford to. A quarter of his wages goes on car insurance but he pays it regardless.
If it was up to me, I'd force un-insured drivers to watch their car being crushed, might hit home a bit more.

Hamster, just me saying, but at 19 i could only dream of having a sporty version of any car. Why does he need the MG variant? What's wrong with a bog standard Fiesta or something that would probably cost half as much to insure? Entitlement culture is dead or soon will be.

Not sympathising with those who deliberately go about uninsured, but there are still areas where it is easy to get caught out, and so the offence and subsequent crushing shouldn't be absolute IMO.
For example. Type a character wrong on an online quote, registration, middle name, address, don't spot it when you get the 25 pages of small print and you are technically uninsured.
Change bank and forget to change your DD.
Drive someone else's car thinking you're covered, but the insurance company removed that part of your cover at your last renewal, but didn't mention it except in the 25 pages of policy information that is published online, and changes every week.
Use a non-standard part = modification on your vehicle.
Exceed your annual mileage allowance.
etc., etc. As long as no damage caused and no-one has actually been injured then the above circumstances are easily rectified without crushing a perfectly good car (if all else is in order.)

You either pay insurance or don't drive, if you cant afford to insure a car don't get a job 35 miles away in the sticks on shifts, move nearer or car share.
I appreciate it can be tough, especially for those in out of the way areas but circumstances don't matter one iota in the eyes of the law and most people caught with no insurance aren't people in that circumstance, they do have options as they live in towns judging by all the Police, Camera, Action type shows. Usually its scuffers in tracksuits driving a mile to get **** and booze. I cycle to work to cut my fuel cost down but a lot of this country think driving is a right, not a luxury.
My eldest will be learning soon, £3500 to insure him, he wont be driving based on that, until he can afford it or it comes down, really wanting to is not an excuse.
