If it was up to me, I'd force un-insured drivers to watch their car being crushed, might hit home a bit more.
Clamping down on Insurance dodgers is the best news I have heard in a long time. Let's hope they stick with it and "do" everyone they catch.
I am in the process of getting rid of my 1990 Audi Quattro Coupe so I can buy a sensible car for my Son, who passed his test last week.
I'm afraid all he will be getting is a bog standard Corsa or such And he will be paying his insurance, himself

Metropolitan Police
Met swoops down on 76 drivers of uninsured vehicles in Commissioners’ first major “total policing” operation.

Metropolitan Police
MPS engineers seizure of 558 uninsured vehicles from the streets of London.

Fantastic news if you ask me. Would love to see this weekly. Get off the roads you uninsured tossers, dont give me the "but its so expensive" bollox

Metropolitan Police
Operation Reclaim arrests included fraud, domestic harassment, immigration offences, driving whilst disqualified and stealing cars

I appreciate it can be tough, especially for those in out of the way areas but circumstances don't matter one iota in the eyes of the law and most people caught with no insurance aren't people in that circumstance, they do have options as they live in towns judging by all the Police, Camera, Action type shows. Usually its scuffers in tracksuits driving a mile to get **** and booze. I cycle to work to cut my fuel cost down but a lot of this country think driving is a right, not a luxury.

My eldest will be learning soon, £3500 to insure him, he wont be driving based on that, until he can afford it or it comes down, really wanting to is not an excuse.
Seriously??

Move closer to work, oh yeah thats an impressive cost effective way of reducing the need for a car to get to work.

Maybe my friends lad should jack his job in and live off the dole rather than getting off his **** and earning a living while paying extortionate car insurance to enable him to work. He should look for a job locally coz there loads of them around at the moment.

Clearly someone who bases their opinions on Jeremy Kyle and Police camera action by the looks of things.

No, one who lives by the laws enforced for our benefit, maybe he should get a push bike, there are other ways to get about, just involves getting up earlier, like I do, 15/20 miles each way is doable on a bike.

I am at work all day so don't get to watch Jeremy Kyle, seriously, if you cant afford car insurance you cant have a car, life is **** sometimes, get over it and work around it.

Basically it isn't optional, if he is paying it then fair enough but if not he is running a gauntlet of being worse off than he is now.

I have to say it makes me laugh when people try to justify uninsured driving by their NEED to drive. As has been said, its NOT a right, and feeling you have no other choice is a poor excuse.
Is shoplifting excusable if you NEED more expensive cuts of meat than you can afford, or NEED to wear fashionable clothing to fit in?

Try explaining to the person who you crash into that you are not insured because its unfair and too expensive, and see what reaction you get.

Not sure why the JK show or anything like that is responsible for such opinions.
Cant afford insurance, DONT drive! Simple.

that wasnt my argument, in fact I wasnt arguing at all. I was merely praising my friends lad for being 19, in a poorly paid job yet still paying £2400 a year insurance rather than being a ******. I agree, people who dont pay shouldnt drive, simple. I dont do things I cant afford to so neither should anyone else and fortunately they are clamping down on the dodgers and the size of the fines and consequences will start to make people think a bit more.

Fair play. And credit to him for paying such a sum. What car is that premium on? Surely there are cheaper choices of cars to insure.

mg metro 1300 mate.

As I posted earlier in the thread, its his age which is the main cause of the cost, no the car. We searched for 3 days getting quotes for various cars etc but they were all around the same price. He could insure a Saxo VTR for the same money but couldnt afford one.

1st year driving + age + no no-claims = big premium.

fortunately, he may be getting a job closer to home so the need/justification of a car may change but it would be good if he could get a years NCD under his belt.

Thats still one hell of a premium. Most people I know who have started with 1.1-1.4 cars have not paid much over 1500 for the first year.
Fingers crossed he can get it sorted out one way or another.

Then we agree, I don't see the issue, I sympathise with young drivers, I really do but there is no justification for not insuring, just an excuse, £2400 for an old Metro is Harsh but hopefully it will come down, if its any consolation they are a fun little car, my mum had one and despite having a golf GTI I really enjoyed driving the Metro.

I understand how you feel about his sense of responsibility and agree with you too.

I really do think those sort of prices are totally unreasonable, I get the feeling they are using his age as an excuse to rip him off.

The cheaper the car the more likely it's going to be thrashed and trashed........the next doors bought his lad a 60 plate clio (brand new when the reg came out) and was cheaper to insure than a banger.

The logic from the insurance company is that if you have a nice new car there is less chance you will crash it = lower insurance.
