You know you're losing a debate when you have to resort to correcting grammar.

I worked in retail and if people were nice then I'd give some money off.......if they were rude or unpleasant / pushy I'd say no just to see the look on their face.............as the mastercard add says. Priceless

Absolutely not true. But the fact that Lewis is picking up on it is laughable. Let's not re-visit his recent attempt at privileged. The opposite of win is lose, losing, lost.

Loose/lose is getting a lot of airing recently, regrettably. What word do you think is the opposite of tight? Also loose? Are they spelt the same but pronounced differently depending on context? Just don't get how these two words can ever be confused with each other...

Anyway, back to the fascinating tale of Jessops and their binoculars...

Anyway, back on topic, that you can ( in your imaginary world Pete ) not extract a bargain thus rendering the country back on the road to recovery is , as expected , total bunkum

I've spent 4 weeks trying to get someone to give me a price on making and installing a large wooden framed bedroom window. Either people don't get back to me or they want to sell me some crappy upvc window that won't match the house.

Loads of people advertising them but they just wont quote me. I've got the cash waiting and would take the first quote I get now I've struggled for so long.

Are they all so over run with work that they can afford to turn down work or have they got lazy?

The problem is that it's not economically viable for a large company to set up all the machines to produce the profiled timber for a single window. And you'll be lucky to get a one-man-band to quote you also, because the price you would be willing to pay will be too low for that person to make a profit. How could you expect someone to make a one-off, bespoke window and then come and fit it when the setting up of the on-site equipment, fitting the window, then putting all the gear back in the van might cost them half a day of time when they could fit half a dozen windows in a day with a small team of lads and a similar amount of machine set-up time? They would want £500 for a single window and they wouldn't make much profit on that.

But they haven't even tried quoting me for the job. £500 is nothing, I was expecting to pay £800-900 because the current window is rotten so it needs doing before the weather gets any colder.

Well, I've just returned from a few days away .... while away I came up against another indication that all is very well on the High Street - and business is doing extremely brisk business and does not need cashflow or income at all .. !!

I visited a local Camera Shop - who do online sales too - to see if I could haggle a deal on these Binoculars ...... surely a small shop would strike a deal for stock items?

They wouldn't drop the £9:95 needed to secure the sale of a pair of £330 binoculars!! What a bunch of utter numpties!! I'm sure the owner of said shop would be absolutely agast at the thought of £330 walking out the shop for the sake of £9:95!!

I said to the female shop assistant, "Are you really going to let me walk out the door, losing a sale, for £9:95?"

She replied, "Are you going to walk out without these binoculars you want?"

They just don't quite understand, do they?

I had to put her right ...... "Dear lady, I can take my money to wherever I like to buy those binoculars - you are very lucky that, today, I have chosen you to receive my business, if you want it ......... you, on the other hand, cannot sell those binoculars to anyone else at this moment in time - you may well have them sat on the shelf well into next year .... while I will have bought elsewhere and you will have missed your chance"

I walked out the shop ... not sure if they came running after me (probably did) - but I had switched off my hearing aid at that point!

Ignore any retail report that they are struggling ..... they are turning good money away!! I can only assume that they can be very selective on which customer they take money from these days!!

What a bunch of muppets

Is it RIVERING because it's current?

To do with taking the money out of the Banks and sailing it down the river?
