Veeerrrrryyyyy sssssllllllloooooowwwwwwlllllyyyyyyy.........

60mph ish on M6/M1 and careful on the throttle by using the instant fuel consumption to monitor what's going on. Amazing how much this helps!

Once did a round journey from West Cumbria to Newcastle, to Manchester and home and achieved 36.1mpg. Hard work being sedate and smooth but I just wanted to see what was possible with a little restraint. Never tried it again since, generally get 25-27mpg.

At the other end of the scale I once did a 175 mile run up the A1 and across the M62 from Ramsey to Preston. Filled up on leaving and had to fill up again about 30 miles short of Preston, ouch!

This was a few years back in a modified MY96 car, before the roundabouts on the A1 had been taken out. Seemed to be less traffic on the roads then, and the average speeds were higher.

We tend to moan somewhat about the 'poor' fuel consumption of the Impreza but it's amazing how efficient engines have become, over the years. I recently found an old diary I kept in, wait for it...........1963/64 in which I kept a record of petrol I used in my then car - a Vauxhall VX4/90 (tuned version of the Victor) My fuel consumption was averaging out at just 26-27 mpg This from just 1508cc and 70bhp!

God I remember them. A friend of mine once towed a 2 litre Crapi across Wales for me in his restored vx4/90. About 20 years ago. Even got stopped by the Police to check his motor out LOL

My Mk3 Cortina got little more than 25mpg too LOL

I can't say I ever moan about the poor fuel consumption. I offset it against the fun factor. In reality only the most frugal (slow) machines are lots better. Any improvement in fuel economy in the rest is soon eaten by dwindling residual value.

A colleague at work used to rib me about the fuel consumption of Imprezas when purchased a lovely Clio 182 a few years back. Worked out when he sold it that what he had lost in value was more than the excess cost of the extra fuel to run the same miles in my Impreza. (worked out at Clio a very generous 38mpg and my Impreza 22mpg) Can't remember the exact figures but it worked out almost exactly the same when the Impreza's depreciation was factored in over the same period.

Considering the amount of trouble his Clio had given him he wasn't impressed and I was laughing my head off.

I was starting to think my fill up now light was brocken.
I filled up to first click then a tiny bit more with V power at 141.9 per litre, £69.
Then got 273 miles, WOW.
don't know mpg but I think that's pretty good from MY03STI ppp at 325 HP.

Tried Mike's method of the instant mpg thingy. 170 miles out of 200 was stuck at 80 on the M1 with the other 30 being mixed speed urban driving. 57.5mpg (Fab VRS)
I repeated the same 200 miles using my normal driving style and using cruise control which returned 50 mpg.
I could save around £400 a year eco driving - it ain't happening though, boring as ****
