Got the box the other day and the iPod has been sent back. Screen and click wheel were knackered on it, so it'll be interesting to see wether they do replace it, but I've seen reports of others sending in non-functional units and getting functioning ones back.
Also seems you'll get the same colour and capacity back, apparently they are using refurbished units. One does wonder how long they hold on to refurb kit, as these aren't even the previous generation device.

They are not giving you a free anything, they are replacing faulty units, most people are getting an original back, some are getting the latest version as they dont have any original ones left.

Mine actually arrived today. Nice swanky new 8GB touch ipod as per the picture above in replacement of my old 4GB that barely held a charge for 1 hour. Sweet.
How much these go for on the bay?

They are free when you consider it was a gift, it lay in the drawer for 5 years, unused and untouched and not needed. Couple that with the fact that if I get a new one I can always sell it on so doubly free and who has ever heard of a company replacing something which is over 7-8 years old for nothing ?

I knew a guy who had a recall on his BMW after 12 years to replace a faulty part, that part was faulty so it had to be replaced, though most electrical devices dont normally get hot when charging and go up in flames

Well impressed with it, even if it is a refurb looks perfect to me

Its not uncommon for companies to do recalls on faulty units, especially ones that could burn your house down

Best one was getting the CCD on our old Canon A35 replaced for free...despite the camera being six years old! Thumbs up to Canon!

Replacement arrived today - latest generation multitouch Yes its a refurb (but they still retail at £95)
If apple want to swap out an old 2gig first gen nano thats almost 6 years old and with zero value and working perfectly with a refurbed 8 gig mulitouch which I could probably get £75 for on ebay, then I consider that a watch won. Literally, in this case
As it happens, wife has assumed posession to replace her 4 gig second gen nano which was running out of space, so she's a happy bunny.
And as anyone who's married knows, you can't put a price on a happy wife. Thank you Apple

I've done even better. I mentioned this to a guy at work and he said he thought he had an old one and would have a look. Brought it to work and said have it as he doesn't use it. So a couple of days ago along came the newer Nano posted above, so I said to my friend that they had replaced it with a newer one and did he want it back after all...no came the reply. I told him that I've already got a 120gb iPod so would only be selling it and still 'keep it' was the reply. So I'm going to sell it and then just give him half the money.
