you really need to see 1 with your own eyes and decide bud. as you can see from the replys all the fan boys will just confuse you with their answers. samsung is best, panasonic is better etc. get a basic spec you want first then work from there. ive got a 50" samsung c680 3d plasma,i got a free 3d bluray player 2 pairs of glasses and the shrek trilogy in 3d for £999 last xmas then got 200 quid back cos it went on sale in the new yr sales. ive had it a yr now and its been a great tv. 3d is good fun i like it, ive an ext. hard drive full of movies plugged in the usb slot and it works perfect and also hooked up to my pc as well. i would wait until jan sales to buy 1 as well as most will have a couple of hundred knocked off the price they are now. basic spec id be looking at would be: full hd 1080p, freeview hd tuner, media playback through usb,and maybe internet tv of some kind. finally you need to decide on lcd,led or plasma. they all have good and bad points, let your eyes decide bud. samsung are good with led, panasonic are the best with plasma etc. also 3d is a nice extra to have if there are any within your budget. and hd ready 720p will look fine on a "50 screen. ive got a hd65 720p projector with a "120 screen on the bedroom wall and it looks awsome trust me.

Just thought I would update this thread.
We went for a Panasonic TXP42ST30B in the end.
Yes its 3D, but the display is of better spec on this TV than their top of the range 2D screens, so it makes sense to get this one.
Will update once its here... £449 on Amazon this morning

Don't know if this is an alternative....

So many models for Panasonic now, can't keep up. Our panel died just the other day. A friend has lent us a replacement, but i'm on the hunt now for a good deal. Budget also circa £600.
Is the 50" worth it for £649?

Little put off that there's no glasses and no dongle, which easily adds a few more hundred squids.

S30 is the 2d version of the ST30. Should be similar spec bar one has a 3D panel.
Goes a bit like this:
S30 then....
G30 is better
GT30 even better
VT30 top of the range.
ST30 fits between somewhere on the same line as the G30
CES show is on, so expect Panasonic to announce their 2012 models soon (launch date usually around March).

Probably a few days until they will say what plasmas models are out: The new top-end model to replace the VT30 will be the VT50.

Really don't see the point of 3D. Every 3D movie I have seen at the cinema has just not impressed me. I just feel like a **** wearing stupid specs.

I don't know if it's worth it, but at least the price isn't rising.

Been watching Amazon for a few weeks now, it seems to me like they get a delivery of stock and then price it to sell. They then hope that those that are not quick enough spend more on the next model up - or use one of their resellers..
However, its worth keeping an eye on it - as they sometimes get stock back in quite quickly. The one I ordered this AM is currently on "3 to 5 week" back order, but watch it on a daily basis and you might find they will have some more back in towards the back end of Jan. The one I was going to get just after xmas was like that, in and out of stock a lot.
And for what its worth the guy in the local TV shop tried to sell me one for £599 yesterday! I was tempted, but I must admit I found his attitude to be a bit poor. Its a well known indi TV shop near me - been mentioned on here a lot. Over the last 15 years we have spent quite a lot of money in there, and when I said we only had a £400 budget he basically said there is nothing in the shop in our price range whilst looking down his nose at me.
Then, he did almost tempt me with the model we got from Amazon, I had already said to the Mrs we would not spend more than £500 - but he was convincing me to spend the extra,,, any discounts? Flat no. Then he said "and if you want one it will be a few weeks wait..."
Walked out thinking I will never go back there - which is a shame.

We got a TV for the bedroom (32" Philips LCD) from Amazon that was usually at £880 (back when they were that much), and one day it dropped to £400. Steamed in and got it

Good price if you aren't bothered about 3D.
