Cool

Tiggs I was refering to the post that us poor "old shape" owners cant afford a brand spanking new MY01/02 and yet most new cars are brought on finance. Just because people drive classic shapes doesnt mean they cant afford an MY01/MY02 . I tend to swap my car every couple of years and I brought one of the last MY00 so it will probably go at the end of the year maybe early next year.

At the moment I am very happy with my MY00 but could go out and buy an MY01/02 if I wanted but I dont . If the MY01/02 had been a big leap forward then yep I may have swapped.

Crisp - not wanting to steal your thunder as I'm sure you'll want to answer but Tiggs - gotta say have you read the earlier posts by blaster etc ? It was they who started the wallet-envy bull IMHO and Chris was merely extracting the michael and debunking a feeble assertion by saying what he has.

And to further turn your earlier point round - How many people would now rather not own a new model given the stereotypes being demonstrated by some of the owners on here ? Equally as annoying as the boyracer/classic shape stereotype it would seem to me...

Your analogy with the Capri is not a good one either as we are talking about the same model of car - & in some cases only a couple of years old rather than a model out of production 15 years or whatever.

Your point about minding what other people think is true to some extent but I think all scoobs share the same good image.

I like em all ....just prefer the old shape done right

It shouldn't be about money because the P1 is a "classic", and that can cost alot more than a new MY02 (standard).

Davyboy has an MY01, but is saving for either an STi (7) or a P1. What does that say? It has nothing to do with wealth etc..... I could afford a P1 if I sold my house, sold my daughter into slavery etc....... Sold my body - er? well, a couple of quid might make the difference!

Thumbs up

Clare I agree for me it has nothing to do with money. In fact a few months back I was seriously toying with the idea of trading my MY00 for an MY98 impreza but it would have to be 1 of 400 hand built ones .

Lets face it I thought my MY98 was the best car ever till my MY00 and I guess my next one will be 1000% better as well, human nature .

I was in a position to buy a 01 model or the pre 01 model and I went for the old shape due to better in gear times.
If both cars had equal performance I'd have gone for the new shape in a second, but it didn't.
Lets be honest neither is an oil painting is it?
There just bog standard cars with "bits" stuck on that go very fast for the money.

Geeze, the MY01-02 owners are more defensive than EVO drivers They're all scoobies for crying out loud! Besides, my Saxo does almost keep up with the bloated MY01's, I need to race old school before they'll show me what being an Impreza is all about

I was much the same - I saw the weight of the MY01 on the day I confirmed my order for a MY00. And if/maybe (I'm not saying ) I could have bought three Scoobies for cash or one new 911, the decision would not have been any different. Most sane people do not spend anything like all they could afford on a car. If I save £40K and have almost as much fun as I would in a 911 then that is great. I can do that in any turbo Scooby to be honest! Money rarely comes into the equation new/old and no I would not swap. I still like the MY01 though!

With a 15.3 1/4 mile he is within 0.5 seconds so why not? 0.5 seconds is plenty within the boundary to add on if you are unskilled (mechanically sympathetic?) at launching like me.

It's not belief - its fact. Old shape are significantly quicker 0-80mph than my Saxo, new shaper aren't. Still quicker, granted, but by a much smaller margin. I drove a low mileage demo MY01 and my Saxo would have left it for dust - in fairness it wasn't run in but it did feel heavy. I still like the MY01's but something needs to be done about the nose.

Oh, are we just talking a drag strip?

I will leave the conversation here then.

If ever a standard saxo could get faster times than a standard MY01 on a track (or strip for that matter) I would eat my hat

davyboy he is only 0.4 seconds behind the time you put for your MY01 on the other thread. Not a knock at you, but it may be a lot nearer than you might imagine. Granted the Saxo feels uncomposed compared to a Scooby under braking and cornering and sounds a bit strained, but it is not as slow as one might think. After all a Knockhill instructor can lap Knockhill in a road going unmodified XR2 quicker than most Scoobs and Evos on trackdays. Yes really.

I did mine at the pod not (as admited at Crail which appears a little optimistic)

I still find it hard to believe a car that has a 0-100 time of over 21 seconds can achieve this time. Unless from 90-100 takes 7 seconds

Sounds like a track challenge davyboy. I'd drive my *** off just to see you eat your hat

Still remember the brakes huh john! Getting the disk replaced on Thursday cause they have warped again!! Hate the things, you just need to look at them and they warp. If you don't mind me asking what brake mods did you make to yours and at what expense cause she stopped very quick and very well.

Don't believe what the mags say, the VTS is defo quicker to 100 than 22.4. Only fractionally slower on the road than the 172 and I've seen them quoted around 17.5 to 100.

I have a MY99 and it is IMHO still nicer than the new age imprezas .... however, the newer ones are much more refined and are better screwed together (mine seems a lot 'rawer' which is part of the attraction I guess)

I must admit that the new age scoobs have grown on me since they were introduced and even with a few modest mods can be made to look particularly mean and aggressive (Knowlesy's and Chris L's are very good examples)

At the end of the day, its down to personal taste ... in an ideal world I'd have one of each - they are scoobs, so both are great cars!

Cheers

Saxo Boy I spent about £300 on the brakes to get them like that. New front discs/pads/braided lines. I did manage to crack the discs in a 2 hour session at Knockhill though - now replaced (under warranty) with grooved ones. If you want your quick 1/4 mile Scooby you could do like what Dave Brown has - get a big turbo fairly cheap, raise the fuel cut and run a Dawes. With a full exhaust that would be about £1000. Should do under 12.? sec 1/4 for you Not subtle but it works.

If you waited till you needed new pads and disks anyway that would be quite a cheap but useful modifcation. The brakes on your car (as a passenger) certainly felt able to handle the power and that was 3 up. With three people in my car I feel like I want to chuck an parachute out one window and an anchor out the other

I had the choice of getting a new P1 or a wrx or waiting around for the new sti. Went to a dealers and saw a uk300 next to a P1 and i made my mind up on the spot, P1 hands down.

Cant believe some peops on here saying that they havent got a new shape cause they cant afford one, what crap!

And BTW are we all boy racers in old shapes? suits me, beats listening to Tom Jones records and booking a med cruise through SAGA. Yes the average age of impreza ownership has gone up on the new shape model. Unless subaru bring out an impreza better than an old crappy P1 or a 22b i shall be sticking to what ive got feeling smug. While im here, the new shape evo isnt any better either, give me a version 6 any day
