their asking price is always idealistic - at the end of the day you're the one paying and if you're not happy with the price you won't be giving him any money. If what people are saying here is true and it is overpriced then he's unlikely to sell it to someone else at that price, if it was such a bargain it would have been snapped up.

I would be tempted to go back when the service is done and offer him what you are willing to pay. If he declines then politely but decisively walk away but make sure he has your number and tell him to give you a call if he changes his mind.

That's what I would do anyway, assuming it's not too much of a trek for you to go out there.

Email negotiations on price will almost always get you nowhere. Turning up, sounding interested but cautious and offering cash right there and then (if possible) to get the deal done and dusted is often enough to twist the sellers arm.

Right, good chat with chap. Deal on the table is £5k.

I think I am happy with that, I think its £500 over, but I think I am happy with that (given that its going to not cost me a thing for 10k).

But despite 2 pages of advice from seasoned Scoobynetters it appears you've made your mind up and if you're happy then thats all that counts. Just seems a shame that you may be missing out on better cars for the same money, or similar cars for less, but its your choice fella.

I hope I've listened....maybe I'm not. Pleased for the advice though, it has helped. But how many late 2ltr black PPP wagons with less than 60k crop up?

Tell him you'll give him £4300 for it and get it serviced yourself at an independent subaru specialist

I did think of that, and would have done that if it were not for the airbag light, which really could be anything!

I do have my own personal mechanic who I know would do it for me for half the price, but the light...the light.

walk away mate, the light at the end of the tunnel is some bast4rd with a torch bringing more work/ trouble.

There will be others, £5k is still £1k too much, mine has more miles but the brakes made it worth £4k without those i would not have gone over £3.5k which puts yours at £4k give or take.

Just tell him your off the hook,and when he does not sell in a week or two he will be back, it's like poker you just have to hold your nerve..

i wanted mine as it was black as well, and i think the blob looks best in black even though it's a pain to keep clean it still looks good when it's dirty

there was a recall on airbag light fault, cant' remember the year range but it included mine so probably not the same fault yours has (Mine was a 1997 car). I just changed the whole airbag unit on the steering wheel and it's sorted now.

Anyway if there's stock available at dealers (ie with warranty) for over a grand less I would be very careful in your decision - despite the lower milage.
