I know lets wave goodbye to family, uproot and move to a completely unkown area on the hope i might just get a job. That sounds so easy and appealing doesn't it?

You talk as if its something new...

My father had to move from South Wales when the mining industry collapsed, there was no work in his village so that was that... Move to where the money is.

Im sure that in many families there has been social migration throughout the country..

It simple.... Stay skint and suck off your parents ***** until they die...Easy street eh..

Or man up and get a job and get saving... Your common man/couple of any generation has never had it easy when it comes to home ownership, that is the sacrifice you make. Why should it be any different now ???

People that just want, want, want the perfect scenario without doing anything to about it make me sick..Thats why we live in a country of slack jawed, semi illiterate morons that will never amount to anything..

I think he has got an automatic opinion reversing switch which is linked to the forecast effect on opinion polls and what his advisors say with regard to his apparent popularity in the country.

For the record I have spent most of my life in Dewsbury. It has it's problems much like any other area but it's not as bad as the media portrays. Making snide comments about the area, what's all that about? You can make your point without ridiculing. My existence is far from miserable I assure you and there are jobs in the area. Dewsbury is in close proximity to Leeds and Wakefield.

If the government wants to help people afford houses, then it should get out of the housing market.

There are so many conflicting interests going on that lead to this situation where people can't afford to live locally and have to uproot, it's difficult to feel any sympathy for them.

No worries
I do get defensive about our hometown. It has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons but we do have some celebrated sons and daughters. Patrick Stewart, Betty Boothroyd and on a lesser note Kazia Pelka (who's she?) May trade places for Devon though.

The bank of England needs to let interest rates rise so that young people can save without their money being destroyed by inflation. Of course in doing that, the hundreds of thousands of people who remortgaged up to their eyeballs to buy holidays, bmw's etc would go bankrupt and the banks would lose billions.

Catch 22 situation really

OK so for those who live in the South East and have jobs you show me where they can move to for far cheaper AND get a job that pays the same? I have lived all my life in the South East and worked in London or been London based working from home and there is no where else in the country that pays the same. So I wouldn't be better off living else where and having to find a new job. In addition to that packing your job in and finding a new one in this climate would be financial suicide.

London has high pay.....Whats new ?? London property prices are high...Whats new..

If you base every part of your finances on your take home pay then London cant be bettered...

But that isnt the whole story is it..

Property wise you get a lot more for your money as you go North, there are exceptions of course but thats the rule of thumb.
Its all about what percentage of your take home pay you need to spend to get the house of your choice..

There is life outside of London you know.....Try it,you may like it..

Personally you couldnt pay me to live in London....The places i have recently visited(Tottenham,Haringey and Muswell Hill) are squalid and dirty,i couldnt wait to get out of the place.

I wouldn't live in London either and thankfully I no longer have to travel there for work as I work from home so agree with you on that. However my point is that everything is relative. So whilst jobs pay higher and housing costs higher than other parts of the country moving to those other parts involves less salary to go with the cheaper housing. It doesn't make you any better off and you have the risk of changing jobs which involves less job security than staying put.

I've recently looked at where I could move to to have a slightly better house (same size but detached) for similar money/slightly less and keep my job and the closest I could find was deepest rural Wiltshire i.e. no good rail or road links to London etc compared with other parts of the county. I don't think my boss would let me move that far away anyway.

I could probably get a cracking place in the far North or Scotland but i'd have no job to go with it.

But with your massive savings built up by inflated London wages would you need a job ?

Sell your house and retire frugally to Scotland!

But thats the point there are no savings because the houses are so expensive. My house is where I spend all my time with working from home and its where my kids will remember their childhood so I want the best house I can get and spend every penny paying for it. I'm as skint as the next person but have a nice house. I'd rather spend the money on the house than going out socialising p1ssing it up the wall. I'm in the camp of a man's house is his castle.

I bought a 3 bed semi last year as a first time buyer, moved my girlfriend in, but she didn't work at the time or claim any benefits. She still doesn't work more than around four hours a week now, so I pay all the bills. It is hard work, but can be done.

Thats fair enough....Sell up and the mahoosive profit your house has made will pay for somewhere idyllic up North where your kids will breath good, pollution free air and see real animals! Buy sensibly and you will never have to work again..

You work from home, have no expenses getting to work, see your kids whenever you want and have a nice house..

What have you to complain about ?

This would do ya....

Lol i wish! I bought at the height of the market due to expanding family so although still equity there is now less than what I had when I bought my current house. Moving could only involve somewhere cheaper to cover the moving costs or wait until prices recover - a long long wait.

I actually dislike the South East immensely having lived all my life here, extremely crowded and claustrophobic and people are just selfish ar5eholes with outrageous pricing on everything. The further you travel away from here the less crowded it gets and the nicer the people seem to be and the the cheaper things cost. However as i've said above people's jobs have to come first so it really isn't that easy to just up sticks and live where you want. Plus my family is here.

Oh and i'd love to move to rural Scotland with it's glorious countryside, perfect for my falconry interests but again that doesn't work with keeping my current job so just not possible.

Very glad to be able to say that we are more thyan happy with our house,as simple as it is, and its situation, and can't see us ever needing to move.

Im sure in time if you fancy it,then it will happen.

Most of my family live just outside Canterbury in Kent, and they look and talk to me like a pauper..

Mind you, that might just be my family and not the area!

lol no that's Kent/Sussex generally. You try talking to a stranger in the street to ask them for the time or directions (whatever) and they will more than likely ignore you or be really offish. Only people that say hello when walking my dog are the elderly who I like to say hello to. Anyone else forget it even though you may see them everyday.

Too much moaning and complaining imho. Others have already said it but I'll summarise

1) People are not prepared to put in the hard graft and make the sacrifices to save the deposit. When my parents bought their first house they had to scrape together every penny they could find. They didn't buy a car, my dad worked every extra shift he could get and I kid you not they had newspaper as floor covering for over two years. He then splashed out on lino!

There were no foreign holidays and no designer clothes etc

This generation doesn't just want a house but they want a BMW/Audi/Merc on the drive as well and be on the p3ss three times a week. And of course nobody can survive without two hols in the sun every year

2) If people need to move to the other side of the country to get a house/job, so what? Who gives a damn? People leave their families and roots and fly across the globe to better themselves ffs.

3) If people still can't afford a property despite doing all the right things then we just have to accept that not everybody can own a property. It's not a birthright after all.

Well in sympathy with his adoration of Billy Liar for his three election successes, he is continuing with the grand announcements of government initiatives which may or may not actually happen, and he will be milking the photo opportunities with the first one which comes to light!

Hope you realise you don't have to move right up north to have a relaxed country life, if that's what you'd be after. You can be within a 1 hour drive or less of both Edinburgh and Glasgow and still have more open space than you could imagine (and relatively cheaper houses). I reckon that's a good mix doing it that way. I would never want to live right up north in the middle of nowhere. At least living down here you can get out and do the city thing if you've had enough of the peace and quiet, whereas up there you wouldn't really have that option.
