then I am afraid you are doing something wrong

I was not beaten as a child neither was my wife, neither were any of our 7 brothers and sisters and funnily enough none of them think is OK to hit children either
Well said that man. Our little boy is nearly 9 months now and huge. So when he has paddy time you get bruises etc But I'd never resort to deliberately causing him physical harm of the above nature. Will I smack his bum when he's older - doubt it as hopefully we'll have enough respect from him as means not to. But using a tool/weapon/object to hit your child is abhorrent in my opinion. This is the being which you love unconditionally and would die for - excuses like 'cruel to be kind' wouldn't cut it either.

I am not saying being a parent is easy COB, far from it

But, if I find myself lacking patience with my children, it usually says more about my inability to cope with a stressful day/week at work then their behavior

And if that is not the case and one of them is generally being “difficult” – it usually turns out that they were “coming down with something” so were feeling crap, and two days later they are proper ill, with a raging sore throat - hence why they were grouchy

It really isn’t rocket science

I found that video extremely upsetting. The father was using the poor girl as an excuse to inflict a vicious beating for his own satisfaction and should be heavily disciplined by the law.

His wife was no better in that she was supporting his behaviour and later tried to use the excuse that she did not know that the video was being shot! She too should be punished by the law.

There are times when it may well be necessary to use physical punishment to discipline a child who is being deliberately naughty. The punishment should not be in any way over the top, a smack which stings a bit will suffice and it should be more the shame a child would feel rather than the smack which should be the real punishment.

Children must be taught discipline and respect for others or else they will take a wrong path. The best way of teaching is by the example of the parents. Deliberately bad behaviour deserves a punishment which will stick in the mind. The sort of behaviour of that Judge should never be supported of course.

Punishment is a matter of degree and should be related to the severity of the offence. A beating as we saw in the video is a shameful action.

I'd agree with that

http://www.caller.com/news/2011/nov/...t-belt-lashin/

Just before the YouTube upload, Judge Adams told his daughter he was unwilling to continue supporting her financially because the young piano prodigy wasn’t living up to her potential, instead dropping out of school and working part time at a video game store, Dudley said.

“Hillary warned her father if he reduced her financial support and took away her Mercedes automobile, which her father had provided, he would live to regret it,” Dudley said. “The post was then uploaded.”

The lawyer also suggested Hillary Adams played up her disability, a form of cerebral palsy, to gain public sympathy, when in reality she is a “highly functional adult.”

A couple of things. The above changes nothing as far as the act itself is concerned.

Firstly, in the video I didn't even see a disabled girl (for all intents and purposes), I just saw a girl. The extent of any possible disability is irrelevant. Unless we now think it ok to beat a child senseless providing they don't have any kind of disability? Difficult to see the reasoning there.

Secondly, should her trying to bargain (possibly being construed as blackmail) lessen the original 'offence'? I don't think it makes any difference whatsoever.

So how about we put aside all other considerations which have taken place after the event and examine the event itself?

Was the thing itself still a bloody barbaric thing to do? I'd say yes, it was.

Yes of course it was. No argument over that!
