Then would you agree that capitalism represents human nature (ie self interest and greed) better than your idea/l of socialism?
And as such, is a more "polishable turd", so to speak.

Default Blue sky thinking.

Don't you just hate that term; nonetheless, what alternatives do people imagine for the West? I quite like the idea of the resource based economy illustrated in Galifrey's video ("like" being the operative word, I'm very conscious of its flaws and the questionable provenance of the maker), but what other alternatives are there? Sharia Finance / Islamic Banking is interesting (seriously), the Gold Standard, the Chinese model and so on. Or do we just patch-up the existing system as best we can and leave it for future generations to sort-out? Maybe GK's right and there's nothing wrong with modern capitalism in principle and it's simply been corrupted by the actors and controlling elite.

surely we need to introduce additional capital into the whole global economy

could this be done by starting to trade with our intergalactic neighbours?

Genius. And only 600 lightyears away - much closer than we are to finding a solution to the Euro debt crisis, anyway.

There is a quick answer to the problem, but pretty painful in many ways!
