if you want to modify above 350bhp (and that really is the limit, i wouldnt want to do that on this engine or a car this old tbh) then your going to have to splash out a **** load of cash, and I mean a lot to get it reliable.
Your gearbox, it sucks, it will chew itself up and throw its teddy out (or around) the internals, basically scrapping your box.
A good rebuild kit (just the kit, not the rebuild) is around 2500 quid (scoobyclinic gearset), and you could probably add another 1k on that to have it built.
Your engine (why does everyone think these engines are rock solid, they use to rebuild these well under 350bhp when they were only a couple of years old, not 15 years old), a good rebuild with decent internals will be 3-4k.
So far your up to 7.5k, and we have not even started!
Aftermarket ecu 1200 quid mapped.
Upgraded turbo, injectors, headers etc, just add another 1k on for that.
Brakes (you will need these), 700 quid min
Suspension (you will need this too) add another 1k
Clutch, 500+
So 11k there on a 15 year old car....
I bought a 2003 spec c limited last year for less than that with 20k on the clock, it actually has more power out of the box, I dont need to replace anything on it (well maybe some discs and pads but thats done and I could do the brake lines too, 50 quid, killer that).
It would cost me around 3.5k to upgrade with brand new parts, I'd have a car that was 6 years newer and handled like a dream
It would also be quicker than a classic with the same power (twin scroll much better power delivery and in gear umph).
If you want reliability on a classic then its going to cost you a fortune, you are better off going newer, a UK MY05 car would be cheaper to upgrade than my spec c and is a better car than a classic in more ways than one

I was thinking of using that ecu, upgrading the fuel pump, changing to fmic, change the rods, upgrade the oil pump (any suggestions for this?) and get a tune. Also was wondering is there a better solution for the oil pan or any mods that will help the flow? Thanks

Tony is correct there, it is VERY expensive to build a reliable powerful classic.
That said, I'd never swap my 400bhp V3 for a newage, not even one with the same power.
And I must disagree on the part where a newage is as quick as a similar powered classic. Twin scroll or not (I've had a twin scroll so yes, I know what they are like) the beefy 400 bhp newage would be out accelerated by a light and nimble 400bhp classic..
Two completely different cars, newage just doesn't suit some people, me being one of them.

Wow! I don't want to spend that much on the motor as I'll never get it back. So really I'm best off just keeping it stock and saving for a newer model.

How much have you spent to get to 400bhp? I know exactly what you mean about the classic. I love this motor! The looks the handling and it a family car. I have some Tein coilovers already installed which makes it hug the rd. I just don't want another motor smoking me at the lights.

I have to agree newages are ugly with the exception of the WR1.
I had to look out of my window and see something that inspires me before i consider how fast/powerful it is.
Classic's are what everyone thinks of when they talk about Subaru's, then they talk about how the "newer" one's are ugly. Theres a thread on here about the very new shape, with loads of "wow very nice", whereas i think its horrid.
Couple of questions for those who have done expensive rebuilds.....if you don't mind...
2.1 stroker kit, does this require a very slight rebore or is it just considered an "over-size"?.
Which part of your expensive builds do you think you could have left out?
What was your best investment?

So you think the hawkeye is ugly?
You prefer the looks of the 1988 toyota corolla styled classic?
And no, classics are not what everyone thinks when you say subaru, tractors are

I personally like the meanness of the classic. I admit I have seen the odd hawk (black) that temps me or even a white hatch but there is something about the classic that stops me. The raw feel maybe.
I went for a run out in mine today, just gives me an adrenaline rush everytime I plant my foot. It's noisy, bumpy, hard and heavy to drive but I love it.
