I ran 400/400 on my standard 2.5l & it was fine. 2 years on & still going strong with 430/440 now.

EJ255 is WRX EJ257 is STI.

257 is not a JDM Impreza engine as far as I know.

2.5 litre in Japan is an unusual insurance class and is not a popular engine size as a consequence. That is why JDM Impreza STI cars are 2.0.

257 is STi 2.5 and can be from USA etc etc but we have not seen a Jap 2.5 STi.
The 257 short engine is what we use as a regular base for a built 2.5 litre.

EJ255

DOHC turbocharged, with sodium-filled valves originally designed for North American market, now sees usage in some European Imprezas and Legacies destined for Australia and South Africa. Power 210-265 hp

Usage in North America:

Impreza: 2006–present
Forester: 2004–present
Legacy: 2003–present
Outback: 2003-2009
Baja: 2004 - 2006

Usage in the rest of the world:

Legacy/Outback: 2007–present
Impreza: 2006–present
Forester: 2005–2010


EJ257

DOHC 16-valve turbo. Originally designed for the North American Impreza STI in 2004 with AVCS and DBW. The same exact shortblock as EJ255 except the EJ255 has a different domed piston vs the EJ257. The heads also have different components. Subaru of America designates the same part numbers for an EJ255 shortblock, and EJ257 shortblock with the exception of the pistons.

Usage:

US Market Impreza WRX STi MY04~MY07 (300 hp, 293 hp (New SAE standard))
US Market Impreza WRX STI MY08~MY10 (305 hp (New SAE standard))
US Market Subaru Legacy/Subaru Outback MY05~MY06

Asian, European Market Impreza WRX STi 05~present (280 hp, 40KGh/m)

JDM Forester STI MY05~present

Ah but !!!

EJ 255 is open deck 257 is semi closed. They cannot have the same part number.

I know, from the outside, the ONLY way of determining a CDB is the x-hatch around the oil filter housing - as it's unique to a CDB. (So I'm assuming a ODB has NO x-hatching anywhere on it?)

What about a SCDB though - how do you determine one of those from the outside?

Ummm thats interesting because the article i posted says the blocks from the ej255 and 257 are the same, the differance in the two being the PISTONS and some head components.

The block designation is B25C on either of the block castings on top of the block under the alternator. The EJ255 doesn't have any designator there on the ones we have here.

Sorry David, I wan't necessarily referring to the 2.5L blocks. More the regular 2.0L...?

It will have S20C cast onto the crankcases in several places

The 2 litre hatch JDM block is a W spec and has monster sized liners fitted into the SCDB. We use that when we cannot get old style CDB's which are running out and will be extinct soon. Bloody global warming !! - everything else gets blamed on global warming, why no the extinction of CDB's ??
