With respect, go and have a look at some 2-3 grand bikes. There really is some nice engineering out there. Just looking at mine now (it lives in the kitchen), the only round tubing on the frame is the seat tube, which has a bend in it, and the head tube, which is flared for the bearings. Everything else is shaped tubing. Hydraulic disc brakes, Suspension by Fox, tyres by Continental. Seriously, look closely and you'll see where the money goes and that's without riding one!
That's brand new too, a comparatively priced Scoob would be what, 16 years old?

yes each to ther own matey, my comment was the lack of somthing for the money. thats all. compared to the engineering input into a vehicle, as an example.
no offense meant, and thats why i stated expense doesnt matter so much in a interest/hobby.
it was just an observation in comparision to somehing with so much more engineering input.

yep i can see how good some of these frames are made, how good quality the gear set up is, quality tyres
but does it not pale in comparision to really the engineering gone into any i.c engine. with 16 valves, feul system, electro magnetic pick up sensors for ignition systems, never mind the complexity of a gear box, the numerous berings, cooling, and oil system ect ect.
these all well surpass any carbon fibre tubular framing, but obv just imo.
i can clearly see they are very effective, look stunning and improve the the bikes performance, of that ive no doubt - its just the pure fact of expense vrs engineering involved.
i think maybe down to the volume of cars vrs road bikes keeps costs lower on mass produced cars.
its totally not a knock on bikes at all, and my observations are not meant to be antagonistic. i can truly understand how reasoning/cost can be over ruled by passion and interest in any chosen activity - just think maybe some bikes are over priced for what they actually are, people agree or totally disagree?

Anything of quality costs money.
Guitars. Audio. Clothes.
If you are into it, then you maybe be happy to pay extra. I bought a road bike for 800. At the time it seemed like a lot. But when you consider a good group set costs about the same, you wonder how they can make them so cheap.
Even a 2k bike often has crap 150-200 quid wheels.

I'm not really sure where you're going with this
OK there is more engineering in a car than a bike but then there's more engineering in a space shuttle than a car.
If you're talking in terms of money, you can't buy a new car for the same as my bike new. For the same value as my bike, on Autotrader, I could have a 7 year old 1.8l Rover 75...
If you were to go like for like... Well with mine you could happily race on it and be competitive so you can already forget comparing it to anything in a showroom. Group N would probably be a fair comparison for my bike, so what's that gonna be, £100k?
So do I think my bike is worth the money? Yes

Personally i think the cost for expensive MTB bikes is not inline with what they are actually worth, i would not go as far to say they are a rip off or anything like that, as people have said above enthusiasts will always pay more for a better quality product, but there does seam to be a fair bit of brand name "padding" with bikes.
I think the sensible thing as always is aim for the middle ground.
I also have a 3rd bike that was given to me a few weeks back by a neighbour, i never had the heart to tell him i thought it was gash!
He seamed to think it was class, but he could no longer ride it and he would like to see somebody who will use it, get some use out of it.
It is a proper ASDA BSO
![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/Sticky/20111210_150102.jpg)
It is horrendous, the "suspension" is a joke, i would not trust it on ANY jump, the frame looks like a really poor copy of an old Gary Fisher frame, a lot of the components simplye have raw steel nuts/bolts holding things on which have rusted allready (its actually a really low miles machine) its properly SHI!
It rides like a bag of hammers, the missus who knows knows nothing about bikes but rides a ridgid mtb with me on some trails, said that it looked ok and she could not see what the problem was?
So i set it up for her and she had a little go, she rates her Revolution Trailfinder a LOT better than this pointless excersise in "worth it"
I tried to sell it for a daft low price of £30, nobody wants it, so now it sits i the garage so if anybody breaks in to steal a bike they hopefully take the unlocked POS at the front and leave the decent ones that are chained up at the rear

the trouble with bikes is that people can fix them themselves so they have to get the maximum profit on the sale of the bike. a £1500 rrp mountain bike probably costs £300 to manufacture the rest of the price is the distributers margin and the shops margin. of The 1500 sale price £300 ends up as VAT anyway.

I have a 2008 Scott Scale 70 (similar but not this exact one). Also got a Giant Defy for the road. Looking to buy some clothing at the moment actually, can anyone recommend some decent XC / freeride trousers? Usually just wear my lycra but want something a bit more casual / comfortable.

RRP - £3800
I got mine for £3500 on the never never
But if you really want one, then
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2012-Comme...item6b1d2ea9db
£800!! As far as I can see it is legit. The dealer I spoke to said the price was possible as it was just a bit more than he gets them as a trader.

My Orange 5 Pro with 'Performance Pack'. Ran out of talent today though, came off and have a broken right arm. Had a good run without injury!

My mates have been really crap while the weather has been rubbish, so i had nobody to ride with ![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
So i joined a local MTB club, tbh this has been great as they ide out regular and have taken me to places/trails i never knew existed.
I took my 98 FSR out with them a few weeks back and it handled a proper 20 mile XC ride spot on!
![](http://www.midaircrisis.co.uk/images/gnf/sun29jan12/mickydrop.jpg)
A lad turned up with one of these new 29" wheel Specialized FSR things and tbh i was not impressed, it looked daft, it appeared to be really struggling in the technical single track, and i had a right old smug grin on my face when i came blasting past him![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
OLDSKOOL FTW!

Yer, those 29er thingy's are just crap in the singletrack aren't they... especially rigid ones - I mean, there's no suspension is there, how can they be any good? 4" of suspension for little roots is what's needed eh? ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
