surround sound system advise

Ive been looking into lots of sets in my budget and test drove the boston soundware xs se and the tannoy hts101 the tannoys IMO knocked the socks off the bostons film wise - didnt try a stereo track as im not bothered about it
I had to haggle the price and threaten to walk away and it worked the manager backed down and bettered an online price I got these for £349 so im happy as the online place had no stock.
thanks for all you help I guess I could upgrade the fronts at a later date and move the rest to the back to get my 7.1 but for now its fine I need to get my chimney install underway
The tannoys look very slick to should go well in my living room no idea where to put the sub as its massive

good job done,
any home cinema build pix yet?
btw.. I watched EAGLE on Bluray last night.. it has PocketBlu on it too that you down load as an app to your Smart/iphone. It was scarey how I could control the Bluray player with my phone!

Update
Right its been a while as ive been doing my hall too so heres some pics of my TV project im no pro but better then it was
Thanks goes out to Adam (500) and Pete higham from the SMACS massive for helping me out
also to bobwrx for my box idea
Before
fire gone and hole made bigger and a new lintel installed then frame was built.
holes were drilled through both sides from breast to the floor for the wires to run
Next my plasterer came in and made things neat
TV bracket mounted and all wires run into the breast (nightmare as it was like spaghetti junction its lucky i can run them under my floorboards
all HDMI leads were replaced with version 1.4 ones
and finally we have this - all thats left to do is put a tiny caulk bead to blend the box to the wall and job done
no wires on show a god send
my new amp onkyo tx-nr609
my new speaker setup Tannoy HTS-101
nightmare in all but well worth it to open up some more space ready for the new baby my new system has blown me away ive been missing out on so much - my technics was rubbish compared to this lol
The parrots not impressed with the sub though only issue im having is getting dolby sound from my sky plus box via optical the amp just picks all channel stereo which isnt right. ive tried allsorts but it just wont work

defintely worth spending the money on a good set of speakers. i have some 10 year old proper floor standing ones on my 5.1 system and its much better sound than on smaller speakers.
if you like your movies invest in a good set of speaker, you can have whatever amp you want but its not worth a w*nk without decent speakers.

My ones now cost £400 thats more then enough for me the sound is crisp for the size of my room - my amp at a volume of 53 is top notch sound is perfect in all areas
with having 2 chlidren very soon floor speakers wouldnt last 5 mins - would love to have them but not practical

looking good!! Thumb: I hate those fibreglass/preformed fire surrounds with a vengence. If someone is going to have a ornate surround on a fire at least use a proper one (ours is a reclaimed victorian thing cut to size). I think I'd have sunk the Front Tannoys into the wall as they do stick out a fair bit, but thats a lot more work, so I can understand leaving it as is.
I have my Tannoys bolted to a metal frame which I welded up myself and bolted to the rear of the TV, simple/cheap solution until I work out what to do long term (maybe moving house).

Does it sound OK with such small speakers so close together? I had no idea that a quality setup could have front speakers so small and need to look at what I'm doing in our new lounge.

Bear in mind the front left and right channels are NOT really meant to be in the corners of the room (which I so often see people do, its acceptable for the rear though), but actually halfway between the side walls of the room and the centre speaker, so its more or less ok for that size room and negates the need to angle them inwards towards the listening position.
I have pretty much the same setup; they do the job. No substitute for big speakers and probably would struggle in a large size room, but they are far better than the all-in-one systems (many of which don't even have tweeters FFS ) and a lightyears ahead of whats built into the average LCD/Plasma TV.

I only have keg eggs and sub but still does enough for me. Got around to watching The Pacific on Blu ray earlier this week and the soundtrack is immense. I can sit there watching the 4 min intro sequence & soundtrack on repeat

We could of added a foot on the breast and built the tv and speakers in too, problem is my room isnt very wide so would be too close to the tv
Im over the moon with the result blu rays are stunning the speakers are spot on for my size of room IMO but could upgrade the fronts once the little ones grow up I could use the current front 2 as side surrounds for 7.1
I still cant get my normal sky+ box to output dolby digital the amp just sits in all channel stereo even though a film is on that is DD ive even rigged the ps3 up to work with optical to make sure its not my amp and thats fine so it must be the sky box dolby setting is on I just dont know why it doesnt work right

Just seen this thread, I used to work in hifi shop, loved being surrounded by amps, cd players speakers etc, if I had seen this earlier I probably could have got you a discount.
Hifi is my second passion in life , car first!
I could ask in regards to a group buy or something like that if anybody is interested?
Brilliant job with the install!!
