Also, if your lucky you will get all the Jap history. I bought a 95 WRX a few years back which came with a folder of history. Was all in Japenese though, lol.

If you look under the intercooler there is a big metal pipe, mainifold I think or something to do with the exhaust,it has a housing round it,and jap cars are known for rotting there, and another place where the metal just "falls off" not long after being in the uk as of our roads,I know Jack **** as you know, just going by what I am told....But in general of course they will be less rust than uk cars, and am I right in saying 300-400 k's lighter?
The reason you often see rusty imports is because they were not undersealed when imported...if any car in the UK was not undersealed it would rust, not just an Impreza.
And no Jim, imports are not 300/400KG lighter.

When they are imported they undergo an inspection an get issued a certificate which denotes the overall condition of the car. This includes accident damage etc etc.

I think what your referring too is the Turbo heat shield and tend to rust on most classics due to them being right underneath the scoop so gets the water and salt. AFAIK imports are not 300-400 k's lighter.
Regarding history on import's you can be lucky and get one with history. I had a impreza imported for me back in 2005 and said I wanted one with service history, It did take some time for the importer to find one to my spec and it did come with service history from Japan. Only problem is its in Japanese.
I now have a MY04 Spec C which was imported in 2007 and has all service history from Japan.
I have found no difference in the insurance price whether its a UK or JDM. Also if your lucky your car tax might be lower than a UK car of the same model year.

That piece of metal is a heat shield Jim and rusts ON ALL classics not just imports.

I have just logged on to my insurance....My white 1998 2L Turbo was £277.33 per year, and my yellow 1997 WRX Sti (is it,or isn't it?? an STi??) 2L Turbo is £659.00 per year, all the quotes keep saying it's a 2007 and I have to correct them,so I guess that is when it entered the UK...

Well Tony,I know jack crap about cars, but I would wage my car on any bet that it is lighter than a UK one,I have been told by several people UK one's are heavier ... JDM's have less sound proofing, lighter metal etc...I MAY be wrong and if I am I stand corrected, tomorrow I will go to the Rugby recycling centre and weigh my car...

The only car that has less sound proofing in classic form is the RA, the UK cars are lighter because they dont have as many standard "extra's" like aircon, electric folding mirrors and all the other little goodies that JDM's come with (note ive owned one UK classic, 1 JDM classic and 2 JDM new age STI's), there may not be much in it but the UK ones are in most cases, lighter.
JDM's do not have thinner panels, they are a standard thickness on all subaru's, including the RA's, and note ive been around for quite some time the only subaru that has any light panels apart from the lightweight bonnet is the Spec C and its variants as those have a thinner roof panel.
To put it into perspective, a version 5 STI weight is around 1270kg, a UK is around 1250kg and an STI type RA is around 1240kg.
