What is so "CRAP" about a non-turbo?

Is it the looks?

Is it the body styling?

Is it the build quality?

Is it the interior comfort and functionality?

Is it the driving position?

Do they not offer value for money driving?

Or is it one of a hundred other things that people judge cars by?

NO is it none of the above because they are essentially the same car as the Turbo except for one thing - OUTRIGHT PERFORMANCE!

So lets just say that "most" of Scoobynet's forum contributors don't care for the lack of outright performance that is lacking in 99% of the cars on British roads these days and that just happens to include Non-Turbo Impreza's.

But they are Impreza's after all, and surely that's what this website is a celebration of.

Live and let live!

i have neither driven or own one but i must admit apart from being 18 and making it look like a turbo i cant see why anyone would buy one.

the fuel economy is very poor and insurance high and surely there are far better cars for the money around.

That's ridiculous, as that statement could apply to all Subaru's!

So why do people buy the turbo is it because of the mpg? No, because it has a turbo and want to drive fast.

Why would anyone buy one? Because at the end of the day it is an impreza.

Before i owned my sport, i had a 2.0 litre mondeo and my journey to work im getting now just under what i was with the mondeo. My insurance is also about the same as the mondeo (which is quite low on insurance) and to get a turbo would have doubled it. At the end of the day you buy a car because you enjoy them so why do people have to come on here and give stupid comments like theyre crap? Its just not needed!

My argument exactly!

My Sport makes me very happy, because its an Impreza and I adore Impreza's and have done for many many years.

I'm just so darn impatient but I don't want to wish my life away.
The GX will see me until I'm old and wise enough to buy the STi I dream of.

Also, its worth mentioning Tubby Tommy, that not all Sport owners buy them to make them look like a turbo. I sure didn't. I personally don't see the point in spending the money and making my car something its not.

Not that that is to say others can't do that, as mentioned before, everyone is free to an opinion and their car is their car. They can do what they wish.

But we are not all trying to be 'racer wanna-bes', don't tar us with the same brush.

I keep my Sport looking subtle, as that is what she is.

As for fuel consumption, if you bomb it around giving it lead-foot all day then I'm sure you won't get much out of your fuel. I however, drive like a normal person and havn't found fuel an issue. My partner's Audi A4 1.8T drinks considerably more than mine.

Also, its worth mentioning that insurance isn't as dramatic as you would think. For me to get insured on a Blob STi of my car's age I was looking at £3,000-£3,500 a year.

My 2003 Sport costs £960 a year, Riddle me this!?

THAT is why I drive what I drive.

I didn't buy it to race round a track, I bought it to commute in on a day to day basis.

I could have gone for something else, yes, but it wouldn't have made me half as happy. You only live once!

LOL at this thread. Live and let live you say... I am doing, I am not stopping or trying to stop anyone owning one, but I reserve the right to think they are crap.

And yes I have driven one a couple of times now ... most recently a couple of months ago .... without the performance the Impreza makes no case for itself against better opposition!

Now carry on

2 points good Sir.

1. I've had a Sport and Turbo variants of the Impreza so can say they're crap (the Sport version). Heavy AWD system, too little power form a 2l N/A engine, floppy suspension, embarassed by other little cars. Ok as a daily hack or a way into Impreza ownership but I wouldn't go back to them. Was bored with the lack of power after a few weeks.

2. This is Scoobynet, not Imprezanet so please change your comments so as not to offend Legacy/other Subaru marques owners. Because if you did that it would render you a hypocrite from your previous comments re. Turbo, Non-Turbo

P.S. Sorry point 3. I couldn't give a flying **** whether you contribute fiancially to this site (I do too - £5 for 10 years "blue" member WHOO-HOO!). Your comment was a little self important as to suggest I should in someway change my opinions so as to not offend you into not providing the site with financial means. You're just egging me on now. :P

Well that certainly put me in my place, didn't it chocolate brains! Or are you really wrx willie? Either way you are ignorant and very rude and further more you're just a boring Impreza SNOB. Also, I've corrected all your spelling mistakes. No charge.

Wow, 'chocolate brains' - did it take you a long time to think of that one up there on your moral high horse? Air must be quite thin

I notice apart from the "I can't think of a reasonable retort so will pick on his spelling and/or grammar" response you haven't disagreed with my points which I corrected you on

Excellent, I'll assume you agree and leave it at that.

Yes, yes whatever you say wrx willie if it makes you feel the big clever man. Though you're probably just a little short **** with an attitude problem and a turbo of course.

There goes another thread down the pan through idiots like you going off topic.

I've read a few of your posts and you've got quite a reputation for it on here, haven't you!

I'm sure mods, friends or other associates off here could confirm to you that I am indeed not said scammer If not then you'll just have to take my darn word for it.

Reputation, meh, I simply say it as I see it like plenty of folk on here - nothing different to what I'd say face to face with anyone either, again members will vouch for that.

Oh and yes, I own a Turbo, 3rd one - a nice family car now I'm all grown up (1st Subaru was a Sport if you missed it).

Now you go and have a good evening kind Sir looking through my posts for dirt

Now then now then - Ive still got my sport - had it for 14months now - Yeah sure there are cars out there that get better MPG however its not a Subaru.

Now Im in two minds what to do - The past 14months Ive done nearly 28000miles now - yeah can be pretty thirsty but hey ho it brings a smile to my face, however I do have these eurges to go for the STi so much so Im even looking at RB320s at the minute and trying to justify it or do I go down the standard STi route and spend money on it.... or then again should I stick with the 'sport' nothing wrong with it. Even been told to go for something sensible like an Audi or BMW however I just look at them and think mehhhh not just yet.

However my 'sport' gets me up and down the country - and every time Im in it brings a smile to my face.

As what people said above as long as it brings a smile then who cares if its a STi, WRX or Sport or how much your paying for petrol either way we're all in an Impreza.

P.S - I still get the waves off everyone so dont worry, be happy!

Hey there matey, I think the fact Choc has 17.5K posts and you have 43 means there is far more likelihood of you being a scammer than him so if nothing else why not pack it in with the stupid wrx_willie comments. You are making yourself look daft... and I am being polite there!

Just accept that some of us think the Sport is less than desirable. It's called having an opinion and that is all it is. We are entitled to ours, you are entitled to yours and they can be different... it isn't a crime!

But John with all due respect you are not exactly an average driver. I expect you could run rings round a lot of people in most cars. IMO the Sport is bettered by many other cars at a similar price and to me the only reason for owning an Impreza is to get from A to B quickly i.e. the performance.. once you take that away then for me there's nothing left that isn't bettered by other similarly priced cars.

Sure i do OK with the twidling and pedal pressing, but i disagree completely regarding the performance not being there. The car is significantly lighter than a turbo, and although it takes more time to wind up to speed, once there it can be a match for the turbo version, in some circumstances it's actually quicker.

I used to use mine as chase car on rallies, fully loaded up with spares, it had adequate oomph even then. It's a far better proposition as a quick A-B car than a lot of people realise, it's just responds to a different style, carry the speed and learn how to drive an AWD car properly and they are quick.

Best of all though, get stuck in traffic on a hill and you dont even need to use the handbrake, the hill-holder clutch does it for you. What's not to like

Well I'm not going to argue with you as your litany of achievements in your signature compared to the gaping empty chasm in mine probably lend some weight to the argument that you are a bit better at driving these things than I am.

Maybe I need that turbo to make up for my lack of talent, but I seriously considered buying a Sport a couple of months ago as a winter runabout (my classic turbo isn't allowed out in the road salt) and found a reasonably nice one (classic) but was very disappointed when I drove it. I guess I expected to feel like a turbo without the oomph, but it didn't ... it felt .... well not very good suspension or brakes wise to be honest... the lack of power was expected, but that wasn't. Maybe I just got a bad example, but I do remember driving one from Manchester to Northampton and back many years ago and finidng it quite disappointing although I am not entirely sure why now as my memory has faded .

I'm struggling to understand how a 120 bhp classic sport can (in johns words) in some circumstances be quicker than a turbo model.
Did you mean maybe a circumstance where both models are dropped from a very high place ???

I know your one hell of a driver John but come on, for 99.9% of licence holders the turbo is in a different league performance wise.
The sport is circa 100 KG lighter but only has circa half the power. That small weight loss really doesn't match it with a turbo, if anything it makes the performance of a 2.0 16V appear (on paper) even worse.

My goodness, am I actually reading some kind of limp wristed appology here?

Now someone has come on this post with an opinion you respect, your input f1_fan is finally worth reading.

All we need now is the same kind of humility to be shown by chocolate o brian (and others) and this thread can get back on track.

I don't know you johnfelstead, or anything about your achievements, but you obviously command a bit of respect from the people on this site that just slag things off for the sake of an argument, but with nothing more than pointless insults to add to the thread.

Thank you for your input John, any Impreza is a great car to drive, turbo or not.

SUCK IT UP f1 & choco!

Yes what you witnessed there is an exchange of views between two intelligent posters. That isn't likely to be happening any time soon if you are one of the posters though

Oh and you were the one that started with the silly insults, I just said I think Sports are crap which is not an insult to anyone. It is just an opinion.

John says otherwise and that is up to him and as he knows a bit more than I do about it maybe he is more likely to be right in absolute terms, but for what I want from a Scoob they don't tick the boxes or box actually.

As for John I suggest you look him up, he won't like me for saying this, but he is a bit of a legend around these parts
