Well if you keep the ops up you will have welding the knee cap to look forward to soon. I have never had my knees operated on as I know the troubles you get through lack of proper physio, 24 years later and I dont get much bother from my ACL's unless I exercise a lot.

Broke my ankle 25 years ago playing football. Slid in for a tackle, got my foot stuck underneath myself and rotated it through 180+ degrees. Good job the fibula gave way first or I would have had a much longer period out with torn ligaments. I sat around for half an hour waiting for the game to finish before I could cadge a lift to hospital, then the hospital made me hop between casualty and the x-ray department because they couldn't find a wheel chair.

It needed screwing back together, so IIRC I was in hospital for 3 or 4 days then in plaster for 10 weeks (2 weeks on crutches, then 8 on a walking plaster). Not fun, but the two weeks on crutches did wonders for my arm strength.

DT-SPD, why will you be off work for the full ten weeks? I did mine on a Friday evening when I was supposed to start a new job on the Monday, but I ended up starting only a week late. I was able to get around fine on crutches but obviously couldn't carry anything, but once I had the walking plaster on I was absolutely fine. The only problem was I had to keep it dry which meant I went through lots of carrier bags when it was raining.

The best injury I saw was a guy who worked for me who was a keen climber. He was ice-climbing one day and both picks came out of the ice at the same time, causing him to fall about 60 feet. He landed on one foot which reduced about two inches in the middle of his tibia and fibula to powder. So he didn't end up with one leg shorter than the other he had to have pins inserted in his ankle and knee, with struts either side keeping the bones the right distance apart while the powdered bits grew back. All in all I think he was like this for close to six months, but I think he was only off work for a couple of weeks.

I'm still pretty active Steve so all the surgeries so far have been necessary to stop me going insane...pre ACL you could pull the bottom part of my leg away from the top part if you sat on my foot and pulled.

Stem cell regeneration to re-grow the cartilage is an alternative to welding the patella so we shall see how it goes as I have no intention on sitting still any time soon

My dad did a potts fracture....Some idiot in A&E admissions thought it was a sprain so put him on low priority for x-ray. 6 hours its finally x-rayed, by which time later its swollen twice its size, and the x-ray comes back saying his ankle is foobared and needs operating ASAP.

Cue one very pissed off Orthopedic surgeon who can't do their job due to the swelling because of the juniors that ****ed up.

Not only that, the orthopedic ward was full, so they stuck him in the geriatric nutter ward next door. Which seems quiet in the day but turns into a cross between the Benny Hill show and Gothika at night. One month stuck in a hell hole with zero sleep due to the nutters screaming and running amuck!

Still, the silly sod would have learnt...he broke his ankles three times over his life (one crushed under a dumper truck, one slipping and falling on the drive and another jumping off a boat)!

My advice - get more vitamin D (adcal D ) inside you and lose some weight!

Adequate Vitamin D I believe is adequate exposure to the sun.

They do this to lower the knee cap. Work injury wouldn't heal (patella) so shifted the lot down 10mm.

an update for those who are interested ;

Had surgery to reset my ankle and make the joint stable. Followed by 6 weeks in plaster/fibreglass

Finally got out of the plaster today, now got an aircast/moonboot for another 6 weeks and can start weight bearing , then more surgery to remove the screws and hopefully then be back on my feet and able to go back to work some time in May. Been a long time with no income so I'm pleased that we can live off my Mrs's wages.
