were things more "green" when you were a kid?

Went to the chippy last night for a fish supper...wrapped in three sheets of pristine new paper.
What happened to old newspapers?
We "heated" our house with a coke fire when I was a kid, no c/h, and wore more clothes.
Cars may have been less efficient, but were also less lardy. Do we REALLY NEED electric windows, aircon, electrically heated and adjusted seats? Six or eight speakers? To name but a few.
My old MkI Escort was just as much fun, and FAR cheaper and easier to mod than the Scoob.

Of course, we were.
Our inner child remains green no matter how antiquated we become from outside. It's not bad for one to let that child out sometimes, but continue to keep an eye on it- just in case. Otherwise, one really never knows what could happen to the environment.

It matters not one jot how much recycling and protecting the environment we do as the likes of China and India are pumping out more nasties into the atmosphere than the UK did at the height of the industrial revolution.

It's all very well and good looking at the past in rose tinted specs and I'm not for a second saying things were all bad (I actually have fond memories of growing up, despite not being well off) but I don't think anyone can claim any past actions were a case of being green, although I do think the OP is making a point rather than seriously claiming anyone cared anymore then than now.
People certainly seemed less wasteful in the past, but as I say, I think that was down to finances rather than anything to do with being environmentally friendly.

Nail on head, imo. I very, very much doubt all the things mentioned in the OP were due to people being 'green'. It was more down to the way things were and financial circumstances. Even when I was growing up (80s) we didn't only have one TV because we cared about the planet, it was because that was all that we could afford. The same could be said for alot of the things mentioned.

I would prefer to say that people have become more wasteful as our standard of living has increased from those times. Only a minor point but thats what it looks like to me.
