It will be mice, they're shy at first then the longer they are in the house the braver they get, I watched one doing a tightrobe walk along the cable to my dishwasher once!!! Cheeky blighter The poison we used was blue, can't remember the name of it tho but you didnt need any other food with it, the smell attracted the mice.

The chicken wire was easy to fit and we've not had a problem since

Had that problem, can't tell if we still have though but there is no evidence any more.
Mice don't like peppermint oil, it repels them. Block any holes up with wire wool. Bait traps with peanut butter. Half fill a bucket of water and place some wire across the middle of it and place a used toilet roll cardboard with a dolop of peanut butter or chocolate spread on it, and place so it is in the middle of the wire, when the mice go to get it they will fall off and drown. Get a plate full of flour, mixed with some postcrete, that'll slow the buggers up.

DONT use peanut butter as it attracts even more mice from afar, chocolate spread does best on traps, mice can fit through a gap about the size of its skull as they have soft cartilage type bones so to speak, u should check your insulation for networks of tunnels, this maybe why u cant see them, and dont recommend poison unless you want dead mice in places you dont know about, set of traps is best option

You need Muslim *****!

On a more serious note I wouldn't be putting poison where you can't remove any dead

We used to get rats in the garden mopping up food under the bird feeder.

When Fearless Freddie our big black and white puss arrived, he saw a rat when he was looking through the cat flap and shortly after that the rat never knew what hit it!

We have not seen another rat in the garden ever since.

I'd love a cat, but the wife doesn't like ANY furry animals, especially in the house, and our frequent visits to France would leave the poor thing not knowing where he/she lived or who with.

Added to that, I have HAD cats, four to be precise.

Two were run over and two just disappeared

And that was when we lived down a quiet cul-de-sac. We now live nearer a main road

Could be cockroaches. They will stop moving if they are disturbed or find cover. Also obviously a mouse trap (snapper) wont stop them as they are to light to set them off.

you need to get an expert in to lay bait. I think the poison needed for them is not readily available over the counter as it is very potent.

We find that a visit to a cattery while we are away does not bother our two cats but they are always pleased to get home of course.

Not cockroaches. far too heavy and mouse sounding.
I've seen and heard cockroaches, (not in this house, thank God), and their sound is very different.

Plus they do come out and switching on a light causes them to scurry back into cover
