You don't need to have a dedicated graphics card. However if you are going integrated then you can pick them up much less than £550/£600 as that is the price for machines with dedicated cards. Forget finding one with the RAM included, it will be overpriced. RAM is peanuts to buy and 99% of the time a doddle to fit. I bought 8gb of additional ram to go in mine for £28.

I've never used them but saveonlaptops have a lot of different brands to look through and compare.

The 17" market though is a restricted market compared to the 15". Dell tends to lead the market in my opinion for 17s and you have the Inspiron 17R and the XPS (as well as the Alienware at the high end) to choose from with all cpu configs covered. As mentioned before the brands such as ASUS and Sony are expensive when it comes to 17s and focus on the high spec/high quality products.

Just please don't buy one from PC World/Currys/Comet as they will be ripping you off massively compared to what you can get online. And the majority of the staff that work there are nobbers who know **** all. I bought an 11" laptop from them that was ex display for silly money (cheap) as they wanted rid of it and I was after one that was intel and dual core. When I said I can see it's intel but is it dual core (the desktop was locked) the bloke just looked at me as if i'd spoken in a foreign language I got him to unlock the desktop whilst he insisted he went off to enquire and saw for myself that it was. He came back and said they didn't have any technical details on it. They don't know there ar$e from their elbow when it comes to selling pcs/laptops.

Have a read of the Dell models, search online reviews of them and then if all OK buy one from the outlet site (refurb but come as new from the factory) and then if you decide it's not for you send it back for a refund.

I dislike HP laptops immensely. I had one and took it straight back for a refund as the keyboard and trackpad were hideous. The keyboard had an extra row of function keys on the left of the keyboard so when trying to type all the keys were effectively one place to the right Not all their models have this but just the look and feel of it was horrible too. Not for me but then you may like it fine. I still think there are better for the money though.

Dell Inspiron 17R i5 with dedicated video card - £579 I'd take that every time over the HP if buying new. However I still say the Dell Outlet site is the place to shop at 14:15 every day, keep hitting refresh for 5 minutes until you see the inventory update and be quick to choose the one you want. You will get a 17" XPS for that money from there.

Yes it has HDMI and it also has a dedicated video card where as the HP is onboard graphics.

And yes the Dell Outlet site is refurb but as long as you get a refurb and not scratch and dent it will be as new. Mine one is scratch and dent, just a minor scratch on the lid and it cost me under £1k when new it's £1400+ and you get the same warranty as a new one. You just get a hell of a lot of laptop for the money.

Link not working for me but yes find yourself something you like on there. If it turns up and you think nope don't like it or actually too expensive call/email them within 7 days and get a full refund anyway. At least you have the safety of being able to use it for a few days and decide if you like it or not.

It means you don't get any recovery disks with it but when you first start up your new laptop it will ask you to create your own through an application that does it for you so just need a few dvds to hand. When buying a new Dell you can order the revovery dvd's for an extra fiver.

you need to be a bit quicker than that, the best ones go in seconds there is that high demand for them. There are 6 17s still on there but will be more money for similar spec. You need to take a look as they wont last long either otherwise you need to be on that site at 14.15 refreshing your browser continually until the site updates (on my laptop is 14:18 on the dot every day) and look down the list quick and buy it.

Yes they are the same spec but just a little bit more expensive. Dell for whatever reason can put the same spec laptop on at different prices. So obviously the cheapest priced ones go the quickest.

They are German and a popular brand now but that shiny plastic shell is absolute hell to use unless you intend on wearing gloves. It attracts finger prints at 10yds! I had one for a day before taking it back as you'd spend more time cleaning it than using it. The worst i've seen on any laptop.

Yes I did buy but that's because Sainsburys were selling it dirt cheapin their sale not so long ago but I also took it straight back. I also found the chassis very flimsy which is why I went for an XPS in the end as that is rock solid and brushed metal finish so no finger marking on it plus the screen is stunning.

ordered the Medion last night... for the price I couldn't turn it down as the spec is very good with the 17" screen.
wife wasn't happy with getting a refurb,
also I couldn't be on the laptop buying at 2:15 in the afternoon when works to be done

I found Medion on FB.. and they responded to my questions quickly.. as they said.. 14day money back if I'm not happy with it.
