Spent 3 weeks backpacking through Sri Lanka in the late 90s. Highlights were the 'panoramic wagon' at the back of the train from Columbo to Kandy, the rock-top city of Sigiriya, staying in a chalet on a tea plantation with our own butler & cook, the happy banana at Unawatuna (bounty beach), the old Dutch citadel at Galle and the murderously hot pineapple curry at the Galke Face Hotel and last but not least the Oktoberfest that was going on at the race course of the Columbo Hilton the evening we were flying back - I can't believe we managed to find the airport after that!

Summary: lots too see, quite a lot of colonial charm, ok food (bit hit and miss), friendly locals, lovely beach at Unawatuna and fantastic fish and curried chips at the Hilton.
