Where did I say that rubber compunds make no difference ? What I said was don't get hung up on it. Different types of M+S ,marked tyres can be completely different and have different compunds, you indicated that they are all the same, which is bull****, the ones I had happened to be **** hot and were tested in more extreme conditions than you are likely to experience in the UK. I suggest you post less in order to make yourself look like less of a *****.

Whatever - M+S refers to the tread pattern. Winter tyres are often M+S designated too - they also have a little snow flake symbol on them to show they are designed for low temperatures. The two things are not mutually exclusive.

Anything tested in extreme cold & designated ****hot will have been winter tyres, not just any old M+S pattern tyre. In fact in most countries that regularly experiences extreme cold winters, the law states that they must swap to winter tyres - not M+S tread pattern, but winter rubber compound.

I agree that most tyres have different compunds, just as most have different tread patterns - no one tyre is best for everything, they are all compromises

Most people who have never run winter tyres don't think they have the need & 99% of the time you may be right, but personally, I'd rather have shorter stopping distances in the cold & better grip on ice, but each to their own. Winter tyres are a legal requirement in properly cold countries for a reason.

If you're off roading with AT's without a problem, you can't be trying hard enough

Me last weekend -
Love that Jeep, mate- fantastic vehicles and about 10 times more desirable than a Defender.

I know 4x4 magazine have just given there 4x4 of the year title to the Jeep Wrangler "Rubicon", saying its awsome off-road and a Defender cant touch it.

I have Pirelli Scorpion STRs (M&S) on my XC70. Came as OE and last 40K+ miles a set no problem (220K miles on STRs now). Grip is adequate for a heavy non-performance car in the dry when pushing it, absolutely fine in wet or v wet weather and in snow, whilst not a specific snow tyre, can't fault them. I towed my bro-in-law's Passat up a steep hill in the snow/ice last year when he got stuck without batting an eyelid or slipping a wheel and was able to drive on any snow/ice covered roads/tracks quite safely and without drama.

My RA with no ABS & snow tyres was awesome
