Hard for Sony as they sold their screen division to Samsung last month
Jack, don't think you have my point, in every venture apple have done, they hit the market in its infancy, they have never hit the market wen it's mature and over endulged, and if they have brains (which they do) they won't touch it unless they buy someone out (pretty unlikely at this time).
No one in their right mind hits a market that's over supplied (take note Subaru!!)

I do see what you're saying Tony, but I think they'll have a crack anyhow, why not they have too much cash. It'll never be a mainstream product but it'll be a good one and of course the innovations will be copied by the Koreans and that can only benefit us all.

What further proof of Jack's fanboy mentalism could you ask for - he'll buy a TV with a dirty great crack in the screen and still suck it up, as long as it's got an Apple logo on the front

So basically Apple are going to do to TV what they have already succeeded in doing to music?

So many people think that compressed **** music is great and now we're going to have compressed pissy assed TV/films as well running through 1080P HD TV's so they look marginally ****ter than DVD on CRT.

Nothing special I assure you. The one area I really dont think they can create the 'wow' factor but we may be proved wrong. I have my cynical hat on for once

I don't think any TV right now has a processor that's better than the iPhone 4s and iPad 2, correct me if I'm wrong? Apple TV will have the A5 or A6 processor.

How's the App store on your Samsung or Panny TV? Does it automatically get to run all the apps you've got running on your other iOS devices? How about storage, how much does your current TV have? All your Photos, Movies and Music automatically synced?

You lot really do have a glass that's half empty. The Apple TV may not end up in your living room but I will put money on the fact that two years after it's release you'll be bragging down the pub that your TV now has those same features and how great they are.

I think in all seriousness looking at the way the tv business model and market is structured that there is a need to revamp it albeit in a different way that we , as the general public, view it. The main problem any company trying to enter this market will come up against time after time is the refresh cycle.
Typically we change our tv every 5-6 years at best.some people hold onto their sets for longer and just move the tv around the house.
Now that cycle is far longer than computers even though they can cost less.
That is down to how we view them as appliances, rather like our fridges etc. That may be down to technologies , meaning that we don't see anything new enough to make us upgrade . It is THIS that could be the change that apple are hoping to tap into and make us want to make the jump but it would seriously have to be good to change our viewpoint .

I am happy to wait to see how this pans out as some of the features jack talks about do sound interesting

Microsoft have wanted to get the computer into the living room for years but I don't think they really "got it".

Apple stick a computer in the TV, make it shiny and job's done. In a few years every TV will do what the Apple TV is going to do.

Almost forgot to add.

I think the the two things that are really crucial to a successful product are :

1. Content ( and how we get it)

2. Interaction

The rest like hardware specs are important but of less value I think

+100.

The mp3 player means people don't really hear the music anymore. As a result people produce increasingly badly produced/mixed/engineered music because they know nobody can hear the difference on compressed rubbish.

Same goes for streaming video, afaik it doesn't come with hd 5.1 sound codecs so why on earth would I want to watch it. I'd rather watch one film as closely as possible to the way the director intended to be seen.

These things are not progress in the same way that mp3 players were not progress for music.

Then go to the Cinema or if you don't mind not quite watching it as the director intended then buy the Blueray and watch it on your Apple TV.

I have a home cinema thanks

My viewing distance is about 18ft, a 42 inch screen at that distance wouldn't be enough for even watching the news.
This tv is for losers who live by themselves in a studio flat or still live at home and watch tv in bed.

Hold on you said it was a "game changer" and now you say you dont know anything about it

It will be for people who own the entire apple family so they can sit there syncing until their hearts content getting a semi on that they can access their apps, music and files from their pc, phone, lappy and tv at the same time, how ace will that be

If Apple release a TV it will be a game changer, that's the only certainty.

I doubt I'll get a hard on but you're right all those things you list will be fantastic.

What possible advantages is there for iTV? It doesn't offer anything new in terms of what current TVs can do now, apart from playing Angrybirds on your TV, whoopie do. If you want to play games, you have the XBox/PS3/Wii for that.

Look at the widgets screen, ripped directly from Apple! Cut and Paste. Good work Samsung! Can't wait to see you getting up off the sofa to touch your TV. LOL

And no that's not the Apple TV, that's a questionnaire from Best Buy.

You could not be more wrong - my tv is a tv and i use it for watching tv, not for the internet, photos, apps or anything else which i have a laptop for.
As for the Samsung above, i have no desire what so ever to sit 12" from a huge screen, putting sticky fingerprints all over it while sending myself cross eyed.
When is a tv not a tv?, well when it's a dirty great pad which happens to have the ability to play a tv channel - you can keep it

Unfortunately for you Brun, people said exactly the same thing when the iPhone was released, those same people have just about finished sucking Lemons and are now enjoying Apple's innovations.

This looks like a "me too" product if ever I saw one, and whilst I'm sure it'll be successful, I'll stick with my Tivo. Angry Birds isn't a game to be played on a big screen, it's a game to be played on the bog!

If you look a bit beyond that and rather look at the technology behind it, transparent touch screen technology, this is real innovation, not repackaging of existing technology which is what Apple likes to do. It can be put into smaller TV for example in the kitchen or on a laptop, picture frames, in shop windows, partitions, presentations etc, etc You could be eating some more humble pie if it turns out that Apple are to make their TV touch sensitive or use transparent screen technology.
