None of what is being suggested the Apple TV will have (and no one actually knows) is new or game changing.
1. Control my TV from a phone or tablet? Check.
2. Download apps and run them on my TV? Check.
3. Mirror what is being shown on my TV onto my phone or tablet? Check.
4. Display/listen to photos/videos/music on my TV from my phone/tablet/PC/Mac? Check.
5. Stream/store photos/video/music on my TV from the Internet? Check.
6. Use and view Skype on my TV so everyone can be in shot? Check.
All of this stuff just works already in this house and not a single Apple iOS device involved.
I really don't know what all the fuss is about?

You have no idea what you are talking about. My home cinema is as close to the director intended it as I can afford. It would put many small older local cinemas to shame.
A lot closer to how it was meant to be seen and heard than a 42 inch flatscreen and streamed video.

I love it when you lot get all defensive and spout unfounded negative opinions of Apple products. Takes me back to 2007.

Actually Ian that does sound like a cool TV, which one is it because if you have one like that then I doubt Apple's entry into the market will be as welcome.
Got to be expensive though ?

We have a Samsung here that tries to do most of that but fails in every area. A fine effort from a hardware manufacturer but could do better.

It will be life changing. If it works as well as the other Apple devices and software I've had it'll mean that it'll crash on a frequent basis, the buttons will stop working after a couple of years, tech support will be non-existent, and I'll constantly be wishing I'd bought something else. It might stop me watching tv altogether
Can't imagine why anybody would want all that stuff on a tv. I don't even listen to internet radio / mp3 / or stream video on the computer. The quality just isn't there. When I can stream blu-ray quality with no lag and 5.1 surround, then I "might" be interested...

Iain Apple and Xbox don't want you as a customer. You have some force field around you that breaks their products or makes them function in an abnormal way.

Not true. My latest Xbox has been working fine for a few years now. Only had trouble with the initial units. Apple is the only manufacturer I have had problems with of late...

any pics of this anywhere (too lazy to search). I would be tempted, although I do run xbmc (live tv + pvr build) + media portal in the lounge to my 108" projector screen via a panny 1080p proj. All media is on by bro's raid array, although we are running out of room slowly on it and it is 21TB :O

21TB, no wonder the internet is so slow. "Pieces of Eight"
Anyhow, no pictures, there may not even be a product but going by the stock price today the market thinks it's coming. Pretty much paid for my TV on today trading.

Oh and the resale value is around 50% after 3 years rather than a trip to the tip.

You would say that. They don't cost much more, don't require additional purchases of software and don't require a subscription to stop them becoming a botnet, they do last a lot longer and operating system updates cost a 5th of the price.

You don't need subscription for software for security, no more than OSX.
Macs last no longer than PCs, my ThinkPad T60 is still going strong after 5 years for example
OS upgrades are not mandatory, Windows XP is still supported after over 10 years on the market. Vista support ends 2017 and Windows 7 will be supported until 2020. So no need to upgrade until you buy your next Windows PC and of course Linux is free anyways.
You quote that resale value of 50% after 3 years, but that is cancelled out when it can costs in excess of 100% more than PC of the same spec.
And just like PCs you still have to purchase software for Macs depending on what you want to do, and of course if it's gaming, well you can forget Macs. Again Linux is free.

Gaming, just run Windows after all they're just PC's in expensive clothes right?
OS upgrades are not mandatory, but it's so nice being able to use the latest operating system don't you think.
Mac's do last longer than PC's, I've had both, your StinkPad probably takes an hour to warm up then coughs all day. I just lift the lid on mine and it's there running the latest and greatest just as it did when I bought it.
How can you say it's the same spec when your machine is made of cheap plastic, probably can't even read the keys anymore, it's not just about the number on the processor your know. I've had a Sony laptop that was £1500 new, sold for £300 in the end. Had a £1000 Macbook, got £500 for it after the same amount of time.
A new Mac comes with iLife, compare that with Windows Live and see who's out spending cash to complete the same tasks.
TCO is far better on a Mac, same with a a lot of quality goods. Buy cheap, buy twice.
