P1 is based on the v5 type r.
I'm on my second type r and the P1 doesn't interest me one bit could have had one if I wanted, type r is better speced out of the box. The only thing the P1 has over the type r is abs, and it's crap on classics.

ummmmmm They are different cars merchanically and very different to drive
A P1 is a v6 type r that prodrive were given to molest. Different drive because prodrive bettered the suspension. They removed dccd in favour of abs which i wish they hadnt but that doesnt change the fact that it,s practically the same car. Mechanically they're supposed to be identical. They even had the same ecu map i believe which is why so many went pop. Map wasnt right for uk fuel, those that werent mapped after purchase have typically experienced engine problems.

Nope, its the same engine as any JDM MY99/00 STI, no difference.

A v6 type r is basically a p1
Actually that isnt right either the P1 isnt based upon a version 6 car, its an MY99 so its based on a version 5 car (even though they were registered in 2000 its older, similar to the original ford focus RS's which were MY99 but released in 2003).

Mechanically no different, but not similar to a type R as they are a mix/mash of a version 5 STI saloon running gear in a type R shell.
The type R has quite a few differences, no abs, rear 2 pots, ic spray, folding electric mirrors, climate control etc.
Dont compare it with a limited either, that up's the game again

The day I hear someone say "I settled for a P1 because I couldn't afford or find the right Type R" is the day I sell mine

Type R's were actually cheaper to buy
The likes of Warrender, Park Lane, David Hendry etc all sold them back in the day, they were around £27,999 new otr.

Type Rs were and still are cheaper, often by a considerable amount. You miss the sarcasm.

you fool lol

Took me months of searching to find the right P1. I acknowledge that there are a lot of crap P1 out there but if you find a gem and it's what you want then it's an amazing car. Just need to keep the price high enough so scratters don't buy them.

The DCCD makes the car handle completely different to the P1, and you control it more

I would second what Rosy said.

I've owned far too many STi's now, of all different flavours. The most fun one out of the lot was a Type R. My 370/360 blob twin scroll JDM went 'boring fast' so went 'back' to a Type R (and fitted P1 suspension). It runs 330bhp which for b-road hooning is ample

If you have the opportunity of a nice P1, I would say go for it. You can always go back () to a new age. They'll be around for a long time, P1's wont

Me, personally, I wouldn't pay the extra money a P1 demands over a type R.
I'd buy a type R and use the 2/3K saved to improve it.

Go for it mate.If you don't then say 40 years from now you'll be sitting in a tweed chair sporting a blue rinse and a bus pass and you'll think,"hmm,I never did have a taste did I"
If I was you I'd go for it.

I went from a 370+ newage sti to a completely standard and dont regret it for one second. I even turned down the chance of buying a friends jdm hawk sti with 350/350 and the type20 handling kit, it would have only cost 2k more than the P1 but as already posted it is a boring type of power. The newage car is a better built car and great for daily drive but it cant put a smile on my face like the P1 does

Take one for a test drive and then make your decision.

The power isnt boring on a twin scroll, its just very linear, which is how you want the power to be, all this "nothing then shove" actually means the car is laggy, something you dont want.
Its also down to the ammout of torque that a new age JDM produces, its far higher (normally 60+lbs and much lower down the rev range making the car far more drivable) than a single scroll turbo.
All these cars I will mention now drive differently, P1 (V5 STI), V5 STI type R, New age UK, New age twin scroll JDM, they also all handle differently.

There is a nice artcle with the WR1, P1 and JDM STI's on Litchfields website (under news articles), it also demonstrates the power bands of these cars.

Yeah i agree that the power is lower down the revs and pulls smoother than the single scroll turbo and tbh is a better drive but i prefer the characteristics of single scroll and love the rawness of a classic

Each to their own i guess.

It's nice to get everyone's opinion, and based on my gut feeling and what you have said I think I'm going to get it. As long as the insurance isn't stupidly more expensive than the sti!!

I only use my car for pleasure so I think a lightly modded p1 will tick all of the boxes!!!

Thanks guys

Drive a P1 and a Type R if you want the classic, alot of P1's now suffer the dreaded rear arch rot but you need to see how differently they drive, power delivery will be similar but the type R does have a closer ratio box (well 5th atleast ) and better brakes (due to the 2 pot rears) unless you get your hands on a WR version of the P1.

Wasn't the only 'real' WR difference Bilstein dampers?
